What Happened To Jim Carrey?

Jim Carrey is still revered as one of the comedic geniuses of Hollywood, whose physical comedy won him acclaim, love, and accolades. The Canadian-born artist was a stand-up comedian when he launched his career in the limelight. However, in 1990, Jim gained prominence after his appearance on ‘In Living Color’. After his television success in 1994, his celluloid journey skyrocketed with ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’.

Later in his career, Jim Carrey became the victim of typecasting when he starred in repetitive yet innovative roles in films like ‘The Mask’, ‘Dumb and Dumber’, and ‘Liar and Liar’. He received Golden Globe nominations. However, his career trajectory changed after starring in ‘The Truman Show’. Since then, Carrey has starred in unconventional roles, including ‘Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind’. However, the actor’s stardom started fading with various controversies and the decision to step back from the spotlight to lead a normal, calm life.

The comedic tour de force got lucky to pursue stand-up comedy in Canada. During one of the shows in the 1970s, Rodney Dangerfield spotted him, and Jim started becoming the opening act for Rodney on his tours. Later on, he starred in many low-budget films and less-famous television series.

In the 1990s, Jim Carrey became a household name after appearing on the Wayans brothers’ sketch series ‘In Living Color’. He played the quirky Fire Marshal Bill. In 1994, he made his big celluloid debut with ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’ directed by Tom Shadyac. The year proved to be successful for him, as he also starred in beloved projects like ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and ‘The Mask’.

After that, Jim Carrey got typecast in future projects like ‘The Cable Guy’ which had a decent earning. In ‘Liar Liar’, he played Fletcher Reede, which won him a second Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor.

The lull continued until 1998, when he starred in Peter Weir’s ‘The Truman Show’ in 1998. He transformed his image from a performative comedy actor to a more serious one. His later films include ‘Man on the Moon’, ‘Bruce Almighty’, ‘Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind’, and others. He continued to star in comedy films, but in the 2010 decade, his stardom as an actor started to fade due to controversies and the decision to step back from acting.

Jim Carrey went political with his opinions, which landed him in trouble. In 2009, Carrey started propagating against vaccines and the rising autism that they have caused. In an article, he wrote that the “anecdotal evidence of millions of parents who’ve seen their totally normal kids regress into sickness and mental isolation after a trip to the pediatrician’s office must be seriously considered.”

Jim Carrey dated Jenny McCarthy, who has also been a strong advocate against vaccination in children, after her two-year-old child was diagnosed with autism, allegedly after the MMR vaccine.

In 2015, the Californian government passed a law to make vaccination mandatory for schoolchildren. Carrey protested against the decision on Twitter, aka X, claiming that the government is saying yes to poisoning children with metals.

In 2013, Jim Carrey withdrew his support for the ‘Kick Ass 2’ film. It was due to its violent nature, as it was not suitable for that time due to the 2012 mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. This affected the producer’s faith in the actor’s ability to back a film to a certain degree.

The next year, Jim Carrey got embroiled in a lawsuit after the death of his girlfriend, Cathriona White, due to a drug overdose. Her husband, Mark Burton, filed a lawsuit against Jim, accusing him of providing her with prescription medicine and exposing her to sexually transmitted infections. A note was found on White’s iPad, in which she accused him of exposing her to drugs and herpes. However, in 2018, the case was dismissed.

Jim Carrey started to disappear from the limelight, as he was only seen at some Hollywood parties. He also produced a series titled ‘Kidding’. The most recent project of the actor was voicing the character of Robotnik in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’.

In an interview, Jim said that he is thinking of retiring as he is enjoying his quiet life with his hobbies like painting and taking a spiritual path. However, he is just taking a break.

He said, “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
