“He’s Got a Pretty Good Point”: Homelander Actor Antony Starr Backs a Mass-Murdering Villain’s Philosophy

In Short
  • Antony Starr, known for playing Homelander, cites Marvel supervillain as his favorite.
  • Starr appreciates Thanos' belief in balancing the universe despite the horrific actions he took.
  • He notes that Thanos operates from a twisted desire to help, unlike Homelander's ego-driven motives.

While everyone is freaking out over Antony Starr playing the terrifying Homelander in the final season of ‘The Boys‘, he says his favorite villain is actually someone else. No, it is not the Supe he plays, but the Mad Titan from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a recent interview, Starr explained why he likes Thanos so much. His fondness for the character has little to do with the destruction he caused and everything to do with his strange but clear moral code.

While speaking to Wired, Starr revealed, “My favorite villain of recent memory is Thanos.” He added, “He was doing a horrific thing, but he had such a good philosophy behind it about balancing the universe. And there’s a little part of me that’s like, ‘He’s got a pretty good point.’”

If you have watched Homelander turn into a total monster over five seasons of ‘The Boys’, this might sound funny. But Starr is quick to point out the difference between the two.

I don’t think Homelander has anywhere near the same philosophy or intention,” he said. Homelander runs on ego and a desperate need for approval. However, Thanos operates on a warped ideology of helping people.

Thanos’ “Perfectly Balanced” Mission That Resonated with Millions

Starr’s comments show why Thanos became such a huge deal in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame‘. He didn’t just want power, he genuinely believed he was saving everyone.

After watching his own planet fall apart because of too many people and not enough resources, he decided to fix the universe by wiping out half of all life with a snap.

Perfectly balanced, as all things should be,” Thanos said. And even though his plan was awful, millions of people found something weirdly logical about it. That complexity, the way he can make horrible things sound reasonable, is what Starr finds so interesting.

Right now, ‘The Boys’ is airing its final season. Starr is also getting ready to play Andy Warhol in a new biopic called ‘Samo Lives‘, a role he says is the complete opposite of Homelander. But his praise for Thanos shows that no matter the story, the best villains aren’t the ones who know they are evil; they are the ones who are absolutely sure they are right.
