The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to reach one of its biggest turning points, and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ isn’t just going to follow the story; it’s going to change the way audiences experience the franchise, according to the directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

The filmmakers recently spoke at SXSW London, and they announced that this new crossover is being developed as a fresh beginning for Marvel. The Russos aren’t going to do a lot of the storytelling that has been done over the years; they want the viewer to feel like they’re entering a new world.

“This is starting over from scratch. We want to make sure everybody feels like this isn’t leaning on anything from the past.” To longtime fans, that could be a surprise. The MCU has been working towards the Multiverse Saga’s climax for years, after all.

However, the directors feel the franchise is at a point where it needs to be reimagined. Joe Russo said that one of the things that’s always been great about Marvel is their ability to change.

“That serial shifting and changing and surprising you and then reinventing itself and then shifting and changing and then surprising you, that’s exciting, and I think you’re going to see some shifting and changing with Doomsday.”

The franchise has also seen several changes in direction, like the Infinity Saga and the Multiverse Saga, to maintain the audience’s interest. The filmmakers now consider ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ to be another big leap.

The objective is not to delete the past, but to make the story accessible and exciting for all Marvel fans. It’s a radical move, particularly given the MCU’s ongoing issues with continuity and the ever-expanding shared universe.

The Mysterious Idea That Brought The Russos Back

Interestingly, the Russos had not planned to come back to Marvel after directing the Infinity Saga. After their big shows, they were feeling creatively exhausted. That’s all changed thanks to longtime Marvel writer Stephen McFeely. McFeely’s secret pitch got them all excited again, according to Anthony Russo.

The filmmakers didn’t reveal much, but Anthony said it was an idea that suddenly presented new ways to tell stories. “He came up with this creative idea that reignited the project, and I can’t talk about that creative idea because it’s the basis for Doomsday, but that all of a sudden broke the skies open for us, and we saw all new kinds of possibilities with that idea.”

That enigma is already stirring up speculation amongst fans, particularly as Robert Downey Jr. is to be Iron Man’s replacement as Doctor Doom. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is looking more than just another superhero blockbuster, with an enormous ensemble cast, high expectations, and a major creative reset on the horizon. The Russos’ vision could lead to a very different era for Marvel Studios.
