It is hard to imagine ‘Avengers: Endgame’ being even darker than it already was, but the movie apparently came surprisingly close to including one of Marvel’s most disturbing ideas ever with Steve Rogers.
Captain America’s Severed Head Was Almost In ‘Avengers: Endgame’
According to the Russo Brothers and the film’s screenwriters, they seriously considered having Thanos throw Captain America’s severed head at the Avengers during the final battle. The idea was reportedly discussed for around four months before Marvel ultimately decided against it.

The scene would have begun with the heroes noticing something flying toward them across the battlefield. At first, they would have no idea what they were looking at. Then came the horrifying realization: it was Steve Rogers’ head.
The concept reportedly came from the filmmakers wanting to establish just how terrifying Thanos could be. Rather than simply defeating the Avengers physically, the Mad Titan would have psychologically destroyed them by turning one of their most beloved heroes into a gruesome warning.
It would also have completely changed the emotional atmosphere of the final battle. Imagine the Avengers seeing Captain America’s head thrown toward them moments before they realize they are facing an enemy who has absolutely no limits. Even by Thanos’ standards, that is nightmare fuel. However, the filmmakers eventually decided against it.
Why Marvel Ultimately Abandoned It
The biggest problem was apparently the story. The writers struggled to determine where the plot could go after such an extreme moment. Marvel also reportedly felt that executing the idea on the big screen would be unnecessarily complicated.

And looking back, it is probably easy to understand why they backed away. ‘Endgame’ already had plenty of emotional devastation without turning Captain America into a horror-movie prop. Steve’s eventual decision to wield Mjolnir and stand against Thanos became one of the MCU’s most celebrated moments.
Still, something is fascinating about knowing that somewhere in an alternate version of ‘Endgame’, the Avengers might have spent their final battle staring at Captain America’s severed head. That is a version of the MCU fans probably never needed to see, but will definitely never forget.
