Ryan Reynolds foreshadows a significant change for the Merc with a Mouth. Deadpool‘s popularity has been easy to understand over the years: he does not follow the rules, and that makes him stand out.
However, now he may be moving out of the limelight. Ryan Reynolds, in a recent interview, said that he is still brainstorming ideas on how to develop the character, but he does not see Deadpool getting another solo movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Ryan Reynolds Hints Deadpool Will Thrive in Team Settings

That is an unexpected twist, particularly following the huge success of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’. The vast majority of studios would want to reuse a billion-dollar formula. However, Reynolds appears to be thinking long-term, not bigger, but different.

To him, Deadpool is best utilized in a team. Deadpool is someone who can disrupt, clash, and bounce off other heroes instead of being the sole bearer of the story. “I have some stuff kind of written. But I don’t think I am ever going to center him again. I think he’s a supporting character. He’s a guy who is great in a group,” he shared on Sunday Sitdown live.
It’s not a downgrade. It might be a scale upgrade, at best. Deadpool has never been shy of chaos, and the MCU is soon going to become a lot more crowded, particularly with the addition of mutants. Placing him in a group would open up a new dimension of dynamics that fans have never witnessed before, with less repetition and more unpredictability.
Deadpool’s MCU Future Lies With The X-Men, Not Solo Films

This change does not occur by chance. Marvel is gradually leading to a new phase of X-Men-focused projects, and the projects related to ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ are likely to transform the franchise. That is why Deadpool is an easy fit in team-based stories, be it with the X-Men or in a possible X-Force-like team.

It has already been reported that Reynolds is working on an ensemble project that involves several mutants, and Deadpool is more of a supporting element than a lead. It’s a smart move creatively. After three films, there are only so many ways you can tell a solo Deadpool story without it starting to feel repetitive.
Putting him in a bigger cast makes it new and increases the stakes. Of course, nothing is officially confirmed yet. Marvel Studios has a history of keeping things a secret, and without a release date or director, this project might continue to develop, or even vanish completely.
However, there is one thing that seems to be obvious: Deadpool is not leaving. He’s just changing roles. And, frankly, that could be just what the character needs.
