Sony Pictures first mapped out the Spider-Verse trilogy with a tight release plan. ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ was set for June 2023, followed by ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ just nine months later in March 2024. That schedule collapsed as production expanded far beyond its original scope, pushing the final chapter deep into delay territory.
Now, producers and writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have explained the core reasons behind the shift. The delays come down to structural rewrites, industry strikes, and a deliberate decision to avoid overworking animation teams while finishing Miles Morales’ final journey.
The Script Had To Be Split

The biggest issue started at the writing stage. Lord and Miller originally developed ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ and ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ as a single massive story. The script grew too large, so the team split it into two films, which is why ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ ends on a major cliffhanger.
That split created a structural problem. The second half of the story could not function as a standalone film. ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ needed its own full three-act structure instead of acting as a continuation of unresolved material.
The team had to rebuild the entire narrative foundation, shaping a complete beginning, middle, and end for the final entry.
That process pushed the production timeline far beyond the original plan, as the team rewrote and restructured major story beats instead of simply carrying them over.

Strikes And Production Halt

Just as the rebuild was underway, the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes shut down large parts of the entertainment industry. Voice recording sessions stopped, which directly impacted animation workflows that depend on actor performances for timing, expression, and lip-sync reference.
With the recording halted, animators could not continue at full pace. Large portions of production stalled, adding months of inactivity during a critical development stage for the film.
Once work resumed, another concern shaped the schedule: production conditions.

After the release of ‘Across the Spider-Verse,’ reports emerged about intense working conditions across animation teams, including long working days, repeated scene revisions, and burnout caused by shifting creative demands.
In response, Sony and the filmmakers committed to changing the production approach. Lord and Miller stated that ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ would not be rushed and would not carry a fixed release date that forces unsustainable working conditions. The goal shifted toward stability and quality instead of speed.
That decision became a key reason for the extended timeline. The team chose to prioritize production health over rapid delivery, even if it meant a longer wait for audiences.
Current Release Plan

Sony removed the film from the 2024 schedule, leaving it undated for an extended period. In spring 2025, Sony Pictures finally scheduled ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ for June 18, 2027.
Lord and Miller confirmed production is back on track and said the team “could not run it back” the same way as before. The focus now is on delivering a complete, emotionally grounded conclusion to Miles Morales’ story without rushed deadlines.
