Spider-Man’s Silence During ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2 Is Impossible To Ignore

In Short
  • Spider-Man's absence in 'Daredevil: Born Again' season 2 raised questions among fans.
  • The lack of Spider-Man's involvement during a major crisis in New York felt disjointed to viewers.
  • Sony's rights to Spider-Man limit his appearances in live-action Marvel productions, complicating crossovers.

Daredevil: Born Again’ season 2 had everything Daredevil fans had hoped for, but it also left one big question looming over the MCU: where was Spider-Man all this time?

As the Anti-Vigilante Task Force roamed the city, terrorizing the people with its brutal tactics, it was surprising Spider-Man didn’t come out, or even make an appearance.

Spider-Man should have been there, or at least mentioned; it felt strange as Wilson Fisk, the mayor of New York, tightened his grip and unleashed the Anti-Vigilante Task Force across the city. This was not a random series of crimes in the dark.

Vigilantes were running around in broad daylight, and the MCU’s most popular New York hero was nowhere to be found. The fact that Peter Parker and Matt Murdock already met each other in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ makes the situation even more noticeable. Matt was also Peter’s lawyer when Mysterio revealed Spider-Man’s true identity to the world.

The moment allowed fans to experience the two iconic heroes together in action for the first time. Sure, ‘No Way Home’ wiped away the world’s memory of Peter Parker, but not Spider-Man himself. Spider-Man is still alive. That should be easy for Matt Murdock to remember.

That’s why ‘Born Again’ season 2 seems like a disjointed experience. With Fisk openly declaring his desire to go after vigilantes, Spider-Man would be one of the most dangerous figures on the board. Instead, the series continues as if the web-slinger had just disappeared from New York altogether.

The Real Problem Comes Down To Sony

The reason, it seems, is not so much a story as rights, and that is a frustrating prospect for viewers. Sony Pictures retains the rights to live-action Spider-Man, while Marvel Studios has the character under a complex deal for their movies.

That reportedly restricts the places Tom Holland’s Spider-Man can be seen, particularly in live-action Disney+ productions. However, the movie version of Spider-Man is bound by more rules, whereas animation is more flexible, hence ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’.

But, ironically, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ may be mending this rift already. Punisher is now reportedly joining the film, and Marvel now appears to be taking steps to reunite Spider-Man with the gritty street corner side of the MCU. Now, after ‘Born Again’ season 2, that crossover is sorely needed.
