The Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney starrer ‘Madame Web‘ opened to mostly negative reviews. Despite having a star-studded cast, the movie failed to bring a Marvel-ous charm on screen, falling into movies of 2024 that just didn’t work out.
Sydney Sweeney however, feels differently. The actress revealed how the film was a part of the strategic career move that gave her more than what sees to the eye. Here’s how the film has helped Sydney’s career.
Madame Web’s Poor Performance
Sony and Marvel’s joint endeavor, ‘Madame Web‘, bombed at the box office over the Thanksgiving weekend following critical reviews prior to its release. Thanks to its absurd storyline and sloppy editing, even stars like Sweeney and Dakota Johnson couldn’t save the movie from failing.
According to Box Office Mojo figures, the movie only made $17.6 million during the Presidents’ Day weekend. Its domestic earnings since its Valentine’s Day launch come to a total of $25.8 million. The film’s editing, storyline, and tedious action scenes were uniformly criticized by critics, and has gotten a Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ score of an appalling 13%.
The film’s failure- something Johnson and Sweeney admit to as well, also gave Sweeney’s career a huge boost, surprisingly.

Sydney Sweeney Says ‘Madame Web’ Was A Strategic Career Move
Even though the ‘Euphoria‘ actress is often perceived as a ‘dumb blonde with big tits’ (her words, not ours), the actress also has a business law degree. She’s strategic, she’s smart and she knows how to play her career cards well. That absolutely says something, considering she has done more movies than the entire cast of ‘Euphoria’ after the series’ last season.
In an interview with GQ UK, the actress revealed that working in ‘Madame Web‘ was essential to her career as it strategically gave her a partnership with Sony.
“To me that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony,” she said. “Without doing ‘Madame Web’ I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there. Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell ‘Anyone but You.’ I was able to get ‘Barbarella.'”
As of now, the actress is promoting her horror movie ‘Immaculate‘.
