This is the Venom that never met Peter Parker (Tom Holland), so how does he recognize him right away? The answer may lie in one of the biggest pieces of symbiote lore introduced in the Venom films: the hive mind.
The Hive Mind Explains Venom’s Reaction
In Venom, symbiotes communicate with one another across universes through a collective consciousness. That little detail alters how viewers interpret his reaction. Rather than encountering an unknown superhero, Venom might be meeting a version of a character that beat him in another universe.

In ‘Spider-Man 3’, the symbiote is initially fused with Peter Parker, and later with Eddie Brock. Venom’s time with Peter is where he sees Spider-Man as the ideal host. The symbiote does not take control of Peter, but instead builds his powers and gradually manipulates his emotions and actions.
His growing arrogance, aggression, and reckless decisions, including hurting those closest to him, show just how dangerous that influence becomes. Later, Peter comes to understand that something is very amiss. He refuses to be defined by the symbiote, and eventually destroys it during the final battle. The rejection is more than a defeat for Venom; it’s the loss of the perfect host it thought it had.
Spider-Man’s Victory May Echo Across Every Universe
If all of the symbiotes share memories through the hive mind, then Venom doesn’t have to meet Peter Holland’s Peter in person to know him. There’s a memory of another Spider-Man taking on another Venom somewhere within that shared consciousness.

The feelings of rejection, anger, and defeat from that experience may persist long after the original symbiote has left. That possibility makes Venom’s reaction in ‘No Way Home‘ feel far more meaningful than a simple cameo tease.
It’s a very intriguing concept, and a very emotional one, for such a short moment. Whether Marvel explores the hive mind concept further remains to be seen, but if it does, Venom and Spider-Man may already share a history that stretches far beyond a single universe.
