Phase four of Marvel Cinematic Universe set the base for the upcoming phase five movies through the introduction of Multiverse. And with the release of ‘Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania’, MCU’s phase five kicked off. Although phase four came to an end, it created a minor setback for Marvel. After delivering ‘Avengers: Endgame‘, the MCU has failed to live up to the expectations of the fans.
Phase four of MCU began with the series ‘Wanda Vision‘ and concluded with the television special of ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’. In between, it released ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, ‘Shang-Chi’, ‘Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness’, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, and much more.

Why Was Phase Four Unsuccessful?
At the end of Phase three, MCU killed the three most prominent characters – Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow. So, phase four eventually had to introduce new characters to replace them, although, the fans were still grieving the OG Marvel characters. Captain America and Iron Man held together the first three phases, which the phase four characters failed to do.
The Phase four villains also did not seem to be that strong when compared to the earlier villains of the MCU. Thor and Wanda have already lost the respect and love of their fans. The ill portrayal of the Illuminati also disenchanted many fans by making the characters look less intelligent.
Phase four’s characters and storylines were being introduced without any real connective tissue to the bigger picture of MCU, while the next great threat after Thanos, Kang the Conqueror was glimpsed only once in season one of Loki. Initially what used to be only two to three movies per year now became three to four movies.
And with Disney+ shows which are coming almost every two months, it has become very difficult to track down and connect the characters with the Marvel universe. Due to this, the fans felt very disoriented and gradually lacked interest.

With the release of ‘Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania’, phase five of MCU has begun. This phase will explore the Multiverse realm in depths and also the most powerful supervillain of the Marvel Universe- Kang the Conqueror will make his official appearance.
