Anne Hathaway Is Happy That Her ‘Barbie’ Film Never Got Made. Here’s Why

The summer of 2023 gave us one of the most interesting attempts at a feminist satire comedy with an iconic cultural figure at the center, ‘Barbie’. The film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of the year. However, the film had its journey until it was made and released in July 2023.

Earlier, Sony Pictures announced a film about ‘Barbie,’ starring Amy Schumer. But, due to schedule issues, the comedian walked out of the film. In 2017, it was announced that Anne Hathaway would be starring in the film. However, the project never saw the light of day, and Margot Robbie took the opportunity to make a stellar film helmed by Greta Gerwig. In hindsight, Anne is relieved that her film never materialized as the Margot Robbie-starrer hit the bullseye.

Margot Robbie’s iteration of the ‘Barbie’ story has been applauded since its release. It is the story of womanhood and their resilience after Barbieland gets hijacked by Kens when Ryan Gosling’s Ken realizes that men are treated as superior in the real world. The film created a record by entering the $1 billion club in just 17 days.

Now, Anne Hathaway has come forward to react to ‘Barbie’ as she was the choice to play the character in Sony’s Pictures film. However, the film was never made, and after Greta Gerwig helmed the film instead of ‘Fun Mom Dinner’ director Althea Jones, the rest is history.

During the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, Anne Hathaway called it a lucky thing that the film starring her did not get made and appreciated the ‘Barbie’ film. She said, “What’s so exciting about what Greta and Margot and that phenomenal team [did] is they hit a bullseye.

Anne Hathaway continued, “The bullseye caused the entire world to reach this level of ecstasy. Now imagine that version … that much energy, that much anticipation, that much emotion … but it’s not the right version. I actually think of it as a lucky thing [it didn’t get made].”

Sony Pictures announced the Anne Hathaway-starrer ‘Barbie’ film, which was slated to come out in June 2018. The film was written for Amy Schumer, who reworked the script and wanted to tell the story about Barbie getting kicked out of Barbieland as she goes on an adventure after landing in the real world. After Schumer, ‘The Intern’ actress took over, but the project was never made.

During the podcast, Anne Hathaway appreciated Margot Robbie. She said, “Margot is sublime. What she is doing as a creative person and a producer is so exciting and inspiring.”

Anne continued, “The mythic giants they toppled with [‘Barbie’] that have kept certain narratives in place that have not allowed opportunities to develop for so many people … they ran straight through it! Just as a cinemagoer and as a woman in Hollywood since I was a kid, I’m thrilled by the development.”

Anne Hathaway added, “If I believed that the version I was attached to could have done that, I might feel differently about it, but I genuinely think their film was the best possible version. It’s easy just to be thrilled and happy [for them]. I love watching women kill it. To do so well, so undeniably that they actually had to write new records … come on! I think it will probably make things better.”
