Jean-Pierre Jeunet may still cherish the legacy of ‘Amélie,‘ but the acclaimed French filmmaker has no interest in revisiting the beloved story through a sequel.
Nearly two decades after the whimsical romance captured audiences worldwide, Jeunet revealed why he has repeatedly turned down sequel offers. At the same time, he shared exciting details about a new project connected to the film.
Why Jean-Pierre Jeunet Rejected Multiple Offers For An ‘Amélie’ Sequel

Ahead of the 20th anniversary of ‘Amélie‘, Jean-Pierre Jeunet spoke with IndieWire about his plans for a mockumentary focused on the making of the 2001 romantic comedy. While discussing the project, the director also addressed the possibility of returning to the world of ‘Amélie‘ through a sequel.

According to Jeunet, one major reason is that Audrey Tautou, who played the title character, would not be returning. Speaking about the possibility of a sequel in 2019, he said: “It wouldn’t be the same actress, it would be cheap because it wouldn’t have the same budget.” He also described the idea of making a sequel as a “bad idea.”
The filmmaker pointed to another challenge as well. He explained that filming in Paris has become increasingly difficult due to the number of construction projects across the city. “Paris is so difficult to shoot in because there are construction sites everywhere,” Jeunet said. He later summed up his feelings in even stronger terms, saying that “Paris is ugly now.”
The Director Is Instead Working On A Humorous Mockumentary

Although a sequel is off the table, Jeunet is not completely finished with the world of ‘Amélie‘. He revealed that he is currently developing a mockumentary about the film’s production. The project is still in its early stages, but he sounded enthusiastic about the idea.

Jeunet said he drew inspiration from Peter Jackson’s ‘Forgotten Silver‘. Describing his own project, he explained: “It’ll be just stupidity, something very funny, very cheap to make, I hope.”
The mockumentary has not yet received an official title or release date. However, Jeunet confirmed that he is developing ideas alongside Guillaume Laurant, the writer who collaborated with him on the original ‘Amélie‘. Their reunion is likely to excite longtime fans of the film.
Jeunet also revealed that he has several other projects in development. The director said he is working on a sci-fi animated feature as well as a futuristic comedy. For now, fans hoping to see Amélie return in a traditional sequel may be disappointed. However, Jeunet’s upcoming mockumentary promises a fresh and humorous look behind the scenes of one of modern cinema’s most beloved films.
