Robert Pattinson has made an unexpected connection between his new role in ‘The Odyssey‘ and one of ‘Twilight‘s most famous characters.

The actor believes Antinous has something important in common with Jacob Black, and his reason comes down to a familiar romantic rivalry where the so-called second choice may still have plenty of people on his side.

During a recent interview with MTV U.K. at the London world premiere of Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey‘, Pattinson was asked about playing a character audiences may not support. The actor stars as Antinous, the main antagonist in the epic action-fantasy film based on Homer’s ancient Greek poem.

Antinous is one of the many suitors pressuring Queen Penelope to marry him while her husband, King Odysseus, remains away. When Pattinson was asked, “How fun is it to play a character that everyone is not rooting for?” he suggested viewers might actually feel differently.

I think they will be rooting for him. I keep comparing it… it’s kind of like Jacob in Twilight,” Pattinson responded with a laugh. He was referring to Taylor Lautner’s Jacob Black, who spent much of the ‘Twilight’ franchise trying to win Bella Swan.

Pattinson’s comparison becomes clearer when looking at the romantic rivalry in both stories. Jacob stood against Edward in the fight for Bella’s heart, but he still built a huge fan following. Many viewers rooted for him even though Edward remained the central romantic choice for Bella.

The actor jokingly sees Antinous in a similar position. In this version of ‘The Odyssey‘, Penelope has a choice to make while Odysseus remains absent.

And Antinous simply wants to push her toward a decision. “What The Odyssey is about — Penelope just can’t make her mind up between the two guys, and I’m just trying to like help her make a decision. … It’s like, it’s fine. He’s dead, get over it,” he quipped.

Of course, ‘The Odyssey‘ and ‘Twilight‘ have little in common as stories. Still, Pattinson appears to see a shared idea in the two romantic rivalries. Just as Jacob tried to convince Bella to choose him over Edward, Antinous wants Penelope to move on from Odysseus and choose another man.
