Hollywood has always had a soft spot for extreme physical transformations, the kind where actors undergo massive weight shifts or spend hours in a makeup chair just to catch the Academy’s attention. The downside is that truly unconventional portrayals often fly under the radar.

Stepping away from the status quo, Jake Gyllenhaal once famously called for a change in how we evaluate great performances. In the process, he highlighted a popular comic-book role by Ryan Reynolds that he believes was snubbed at the Oscars.

After his debut role in the cult film ‘Donnie Darko,’ Jake Gyllenhaal has cracked the code to film stardom with flawless precision. With hard-hitting, critically acclaimed character studies such as ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and ‘Nightcrawler,’ Gyllenhaal proved his versatility across both indie and mainstream cinema.

His natural ability to switch roles led him to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2019, where he successfully portrayed Mysterio in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home.’ Putting on the role of an illusionist who creates grand fantasies was quite a challenge.

But his amazing performance received widespread recognition, contributing to the movie’s global success alongside Tom Holland. Before portraying the character, Gyllenhaal was already aware of the difficulties of playing elite superheroes.

Speaking to Vulture, the actor mentioned another performance by his industry peer that, according to him, should have received an Academy Award nomination.

“I look at Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool, and I say, ‘No one can do that but him,’” he said. “That is truly, purely him. As an artist, he struggled for several years to figure that out, and it’s all there on the screen. And it’s brilliant.”

Major Misconception Blocking The Path

Reynolds took on the role of the wisecracking mutant Wade Wilson in 2016, becoming a definitive version of the character after his unconvincing 2009 interpretation in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine.’

Having spent several years persuading the studios of his vision for how this antihero should look, the actor succeeded in creating a commercial phenomenon. It’s because of charm and comic timing that ‘Deadpool’ found itself among the year’s highest-grossing films.

It also became the highest-earning R-rated film, thereby launching the franchise. Traditionally, the Academy Awards overlook comic book adaptations, as they are considered merely technical works, with only a few exceptions.

These include Heath Ledger’s historic posthumous win in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in ‘The Dark Knight’ and the nomination of ‘Black Panther’ for Best Picture. However, Gyllenhaal believes that quality must prevail over genres and biases.

“Sure, it’s a comic-book movie, and it’s made a lot of money, but that doesn’t subtract from Ryan’s extraordinary work. Let’s ask ourselves: What else do we want from people who create? Something that is truly them.”

Even though some critics and purists in the movie industry still question the quality of mass-market blockbuster entertainment, Gyllenhaal’s words hit the nail on the head. True cinematic brilliance extends far beyond traditional Oscar bait. It emerges wherever an artist pours their heart and soul into a role.
