The long-awaited crossover between the iconic franchises, ‘Transformers’ and ‘G.I. Joe’, is inching closer to reality. Previously, the ending of ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ revealed that Cypertronians existed in a world with G.I. Joe.
Now, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has confirmed that a crossover film is indeed in the works. While the exact details of the crossover remain shrouded in mystery, the confirmation is enough to excite fans.
The Future Of ‘Transformers’ And ‘G.I. Joe’
The success of ‘Transformers One’, the upcoming origin story for Optimus Prime and Megatron, will significantly impact the timeline for both franchises. “We’re going to do a sequel to this, and there will be an animated version, and it will exist completely separately from whatever we do live-action. The next live-action movie will be a crossover,” di Bonaventura told Collider.

While the animated sequel is a given, the live-action future hinges on the film’s box office performance. Additionally, if ‘Transformers One’ delivers a monster haul, we can expect to see more sequels and potentially even a crossover with G.I. Joe.
Di Bonaventura offered some clarity on the crossover’s timeline as he revealed that it will be the next live-action installment. Moreover, he also emphasized that ‘Transformers One’ will influence how the robots are portrayed going forward.
The films are going to focus on their emotional depth. As Lorenzo stated, “Where it will be particularly affected is the fact that we now know what these robots are capable of emotionally in a way. So we’re going to have to figure out how to create that room, that we can afford that, and create a story that you can take more advantage of that.“
Producers Aim Find The Right Balance Between Joes and Transformers
The upcoming Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover presents a unique challenge: balancing the numerous characters from both franchises. While human characters like Noah and Mirage are likely to return, the focus remains on the Cybertronians and their own stories.

“Instead of them reacting to humans or reacting to the human plot, what is their drive, has to be part of that story now,” di Bonaventura said. “So it’s going to be complicated because now the hardest thing about a lot of franchise movies is how many characters there are. And the more characters you try to manage, the harder it is to make a bunch of really good ones.”
Lorenzo di Bonaventura also emphasized the importance of giving the Transformers their own agency and motivations during the interview. He acknowledged that the sheer number of characters can make it difficult to develop them all fully.
However, he ensured that the team is currently experimenting with different combinations of Joes and Transformers to find the right balance.
