Lee took on the role of Lord Summerisle, the eccentric and charismatic leader of the isolated Scottish island where the film takes place.
He serves as the heretical figurehead of the community, overseeing its pagan rituals and customs. In an interview many years later, Lee expressed his willingness to forgo his fee for the sake of the project. According to his own account, the film would have been much more challenging to complete had the creators paid him his usual price.

He repeatedly insisted that he earned nothing for taking part in the movie. “I got paid nothing. I keep repeating to people, they don’t believe it’s true,” he said. He was so fiercely protective of the movie that he even spent his own money to fly to Paris and personally screen it for critics to prove the studio wrong.
Lee also became its avid promoter, convinced that the screenplay offered something genuinely original. He believed the project deserved to be made even if that meant sacrificing his own earnings entirely.
‘The Wicker Man’ Became Lee’s Most Cherished Project
The plot of the movie centers on the clash between Christianity and paganism, driving a deeply religious protagonist to go to great lengths to find the truth, unaware of the trap set for him. Lee found this narrative so compelling that he considered Lord Summerisle the best role of his career.

‘The Wicker Man‘ was poorly received upon its initial release because of studio interference and poor distribution. Nonetheless, the movie has acquired a dedicated cult following over time and now stands out as one of the most important works in folk horror.
