Selena Gomez has had an incredibly successful career in music. One of Disney’s biggest stars, she emerged as a singer at a very young age when she was working in Barney And Friends and later rose to prominence for her iconic role Alex Russo.
Throughout her career, Gomez has had a lot of chart-topping songs that have established her place in Hollywood as an A-list singer. One of her most iconic songs, however, remains ‘Who Says’, which was recorded while she was in the band Selena Gomez And The Scene. As it turns out, Gomez wasn’t the first choice for the song, and the song was originally given to another artist. Here’s who Gomez almost lost her iconic song to and how it finally worked out.

Who Was ‘Who Says’ Originally Given To?
At a Twilio SIGNAL conference, Selena Gomez talked about the song and how she persuaded Disney to let her sing it. “It’s actually a funny story: I was working with Disney at the time, and they were actually giving the song to another artist,” Gomez said. “And I cried—I remember, I was with my mom—because I loved the song so much. I basically said to my label, ‘I feel like my fans are young and they need it.’ That’s all I kept saying because I was 16 at the time. I was like, ‘I think my fans really need it; tell [them] my fans really need the song.’ And so maybe it just didn’t work out with the other artist, but that [getting “Who Say”] was a gift to me that I did not know I needed.”
She continued, “And I love, love that song, and it has carried with me through my whole career, and I fought for it. So to be honest, I, to this day, need to hear it. Not by me. I don’t want to hear myself sing it. I’m just saying the message it will last and last because it’s the truth. It’s such a special song.”
She also said that the song is one of her favorite records. She said, “I think it’s really meaningful, and it’s kind of a big anthem. It went platinum so it’s my second song ever that’s platinum. I was really excited, I was in the car when I found out promoting the third album. It gave me a big boost.”

What Is Selena Gomez’s ‘Who Says’ About?
In 2011, Selena Gomez & the Scene released ‘Who Says‘ as a single from their album ‘When the Sun Goes Down‘. Emanuel Kiriakou and Priscilla Renea wrote the song while Gomez sang it.
The song is an inspiration to embrace our true selves and resist being influenced by the unfavorable judgments of others. It also carries a message of self-acceptance and empowerment. Despite not having written the song, Selena Gomez decided to record and release it, probably because the song’s message spoke to her and was consistent with her own principles.
Thanks to its cheerful lyrics and appealing music, the song immediately became popular. Younger listeners who could be battling with issues of self-esteem and societal influences found the song’s message of self-assurance and self-love to be touching. The song gained popularity as an anthem of self-love and empowerment, and its encouraging message still remains relevant and embraced.
