The pop world during the Y2K era was one of the most interesting times to live. Pop stars, who have been ruling the music charts, and defining the culture, emerged during the new millennium. We saw the rise of Paris Hilton, and Rihanna creating ripples. But, two of the most loved stars of the era, who were pitted against are Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera.

Christina Aguilera had a kick start in the industry as a child actor when she starred in Disney’s, ‘The All-New Mickey Mouse.’ It had a rich cast including Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and others. The pop star released her self-titled debut studio album in 1999. While Aguilera was climbing the charts in the new millennium, a star emerged on the horizon in 2008, Lady Gaga. When she came on the scene, people started comparing her with the ‘What a Girl Wants’ singer. The two started being snarky with one another leading to a short-lived feud.

The beef between the artists in the music industry has been long-standing! It is like an unwritten tradition. Some get ignited due to external forces while some are the ones that the artists create. Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera’s feud was a mix of both. Gaga came on the scene with her single ‘Just Dance,’ which was a bop dance number. When she came, many artists complained about her music and styling similar to theirs.

Artists like Róisín Murphy said that Gaga stole her style while Aguilera’s fans, Fighters, accused Gaga of copying her music. But, the origin of the feud between the ‘Poker Face’ artist and Christina was due to similar styles. Many people observed that the songstress started having a similar style to that of Gaga. Akon, who signed Lady Gaga to his label, said that Christina switched up as soon as the Grammy-winning artist came onto the scene.

Akon said, “You are actually giving Christina too much credit. She always had her cool little look and way about how she went about things. But soon as Gaga came out everything switched up. Christina stepped out of her own shell to become something different.”

During the feuding era, the ‘Infatuation’ singer denied knowing Lady Gaga. She said, “I’m not quite sure who this person is, to be honest. I don’t know if it is a man or a woman. I just wasn’t sure. I really don’t spend any time on the Internet, so I guess I live a little under a rock in that respect.”

In 2013, during the finale of ‘The Voice,’ Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera seemingly dissolved their long-standing beef. Gaga came on stage to perform her hit single, ‘Do What U Want,’ featuring R Kelly. During the performance, Christina, who was also the judge of the US version of the show, joined her to sing a duet. The two songstresses serenaded the audience with their vocals.

In 2010, Christina Aguilera posted a letter on her official site to clear the air about the animosity. She wrote, “I have absolutely nothing against Lady Gaga or any other female artist in this business. I think she is great, and I appreciate any woman fearless enough to go against the norm. She has earned her success with hard work and a clear focus and I have nothing but respect for that. There is room for all of us on everyone’s iPods.”

Lady Gaga also reacted to the feud by saying that she has been her fan for a long time. The artist said, “I’m a very big fan of Christina Aguilera and from the very beginning when my career started, there was all of this controversy about the two of us. I always felt it was very unfair to her.”

Gaga continued, “All I know is that people were talking about Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga. “I just think it’s very unfair for anybody to pit another woman against another woman. Especially in the space of music when we are all just trying to be taken seriously.”
