What Was The Vanessa Bryant And Meek Mill Controversy?

The teenager who lost a rap battle at the corner of 24th and Berks in Philadelphia is now charting Billboard. Meek Mill has grinded hard to achieve the success he has today. Before starting his solo career, he was a part of the crew ‘Bloodhoundz’. The rapper has two of his albums charting at the No.1 position on the Billboard 200. Meek has had a history of criminal records, but it has not affected his 14 years career. But, there was a moment when the widow of the late Kobe Bryant, Vanessa Bryant called him out.

In January 2020, the Basketball world lost one of its most glorious and celebrated players, Lobe Bryant. The LA Lakers player was the five-time NBA champion. When he was on his way to Thousand Oaks, California for a tournament, his plane crashed. It took the life of Kobe and his daughter Gianna Maria Bryant. In a tribute to the greatest players of all time, Mill had a song that leaked in 2021, which had some “insensitive” lyrics which did not sit well with Vanessa. What was the song? There would be a handful of people who did not admire Kobe Bryant. The whole world mourned the death of the player. Everyone tried to pay tribute to the late Lakers player in their way.

When he died, Meek asked the National Basketball Association (NBA) to tweak their logo with a shadow of Black Mamba to pay tribute to Kobe. Going his way out, he also made a track with Lil Baby to commemorate him. The track was called ‘Don’t Worry(RIP Kobe)’.

When Vanessa came across the track, which got leaked, she was fuming to see some of the lyrics that she deemed to be “insensitive”. In one of the verses, he says, “This b***h I’m f****in’ always tell me that she love but she ain’t ever showed me. Yeah, and if I ever lack, I’m goin’ out with my chopper, it be another Kobe”.

Even Lil Baby referenced him saying, ‘… have a son, so I can name him Kobe/Daughter Gigi’. Vanessa took it to her Instagram to call out the ‘Amen’ artist. She termed the lyrics as “extremely insensitive” and “disrespectful”. She wrote, referencing a picture of the lyrics. “Dear @meekmill, I find this line to be extremely insensitive and disrespectful. Period”.

In her Instagram story, she continued, “I am not familiar with any of your music, but I believe you can do better than this. If you are a fan, fine, there’s a better way to show your admiration for my husband. This lacks respect and tact”.

On Twitter, Meek Mill wrote to clear the air about the whole controversy and whether he apologized to her or not. He went on a rant and wrote, “I don’t think we on the same signal y’all .. I don’t see what y’all see… I be looking at the net laughing like I did whet   I say random shit all day on social  … it becomes a trend to hate on me every once in a while but I feed off that shit ima beast literally”.

He said that he apologized to her privately rather than with a public apology statement. Mill wrote, “I apologized to her in private earlier  today not to the public…Nothing I say on my page directed to a internet viral moment or the family of a grieving woman! If you care about someone grieving change the subject!”
