Anthony Russo, the co-director of Ryan Gosling’s “The Gray Man”, claimed that the Netflix film will be part of a larger cinematic world. This is exciting news for fans as a complete cinematic world has been planned for the project.

In a speech to The Wall Street Journal’s Future of Whatever Celebration, “The Gray Man” co-director Anthony Russo said, “Everything we are producing at AGBO has universe potential.” He assured everyone that they are merely witnessing the tip of the iceberg when it comes to “The Gray Man’s” deep plot. Apparently, “The Gray Man” bears some resemblance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly, “Captain America” films starring Chris Evans. “For those who were fans of ‘Captain America: Winter Soldier’, this is us moving into that territory in a more real-world setting,” Russo said. For Marvel Studios, the Russo brothers directed the first three “Captain America” movies, as well as “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”.

Before “The Gray Man” premieres on Netflix, Anthony Russo said that both a prequel and a follow-up are in early stages of development. Reese and Wernick are still working on a prequel with Chris Evans as Lloyd Hansen, according to reports. Gosling will reprise his role as Court Gentry in a follow-up film helmed by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

“The Gray Man” co-director Joe Russon had talked about his hopes for expanding the film’s universe if it turned out to be a hit. As he explained, “The idea is to create a franchise and to build out an entire universe. Our first movie commitment will help us get to the second one, and that’s a good thing. Evans and Gosling’s characters have to track down these master assassins after Gosling’s character is caught and burned by the CIA.”

On July 15, the release of “The Gray Man” will be followed by Netflix’s release on July 22. It will be Netflix’s most expensive movie yet, with a $200 million budget.
