Stranger Things’ grew much bigger than its initial concept over the years. The original tale of a bunch of kids riding bikes through Hawkins morphed into a huge sci-fi epic with government plots, world-ending dangers, and a cast of fan-favorite characters.

That development was responsible for the series’s success. However, it also turned the focus away from the friendships that drew viewers to the show in the first place. That’s why ‘Stranger Things: Tales from ’85’ is a welcome addition to the franchise.

The animated spinoff takes viewers back to a simpler time in Hawkins, between seasons 2 and 3 of the original series. The show does not have to deal with multiple storylines involving adults and older teens. Instead, it focuses on the younger characters.

Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Max, and Will continue to carry the story, with newcomer Nikki Baxter. Some familiar characters, like Steve, Hopper, and Nancy, are still there, but they are mostly in supporting roles. It’s a very nostalgic choice for those who have been following the show for a long time.

The chemistry between the young heroes of ‘Stranger Things’ is what made the first seasons so great. Their teamwork in solving mysteries, debating, laughing, and overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds together built the emotional heart of the series.

That bond separated it from other shows. The animated version goes back to that dynamic without the burden of the increasingly complicated mythology that prevailed in later seasons.

A Lighter Tone Gives The Franchise New Life

The other thing that’s different is the overall vibe of the show. ‘Tales from ’85’ takes a more lighthearted tone than the original series, which was darker and more intense with each season. While there are still monsters, supernatural threats, and dangers lurking around Hawkins, the focus is often more on adventure, friendship, and discovery, rather than just tragedy.

The change makes the series feel very welcoming. It’s about the thrill of children going on wild adventures, but still retaining the magic that fans have come to love from the franchise. Most significantly, the spinoff tackles one of the main criticisms of the later seasons: the main group of friends spending too much time apart.

In this, the characters are reunited and are experiencing problems as a group. It’s a quick fix, but one that serves as a reminder to viewers of why they loved ‘Stranger Things’ in the first place. The franchise doesn’t require bigger stakes or more elaborate mythology all the time. All it takes is a bunch of friends, a mystery to solve, and another adventure around the corner.
