Netflix’s ‘Heartstopper’ won several hearts ever since its release in 2022. The series was adapted from the book of the same name by Alice Oseman who also wrote and created the TV series. The show’s third season is set to release in October 2024.
However, in a turn of events, the creator of the show Alice Oseman shared heartbreaking news for the fans. She revealed that actress Olivia Colman who portrayed Sarah Nelson (Nick Nelson’s mom) will not return for season 3.

Olivia Colman Exits ‘Heartstopper’
Oseman took to her Instagram to share a message to address the concerns of fans about the future of the character of Sarah Nelson. “We did not re-cast Sarah, and I know many of you comic fans especially will be upset and concerned about how we will move forward without Nick’s mum. I know there is one scene in particular that many of you have been looking forward to in season 3, and you may be feeling disappointed and disheartened with us,” she added.
She asked fans to not give up hope and revealed that she was trying everything to make it the best for everyone. “If there is one thing I could ask of you, it’s not to give up on us quite yet. I have done everything in my power to preserve that scene as written in the comic, and I’ve written some new elements of the story to ensure that it gives us the emotional punch that it gives in the comic.”
After shutting down the rumors of re-cast she clarified that instead of his mom Nick would rely on other characters for emotional support. “And as for the rest of the season please have faith! Nick’s story from the comics is still there, still infinitely important to me, and Sarah’s role as emotional support for Nick will shift to other characters in the story for now. If you get a season four, I would love for Olivia to be a part of it again.”

Olivia Colman Will Be Back For Season 4
Before Oseman’s statement regarding Oliva Colman’s character and its future in ‘Heartstopper‘, Olivia herself talked about her involvement in season 3 of the show. In an interview with Forbes, Colman talked about her love for the character.
However, despite everything she wasn’t able to manage filling for season 3 with her busy schedule. “I couldn’t do number 3, I couldn’t fit it in, I feel awful about that. I feel like I was part of one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever been part of,” she said.
