Will Smith To Exit ‘Bad Boys 4’ Due To Oscars Slap Controversy? Martin Lawrence Reveals The Truth

Perhaps the reason why Oscars 2022 was the most talked about event was because of the Will Smith and Chris Rock incident. During the awards ceremony, Rock made an inappropriate comment about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and it was only seconds later that Smith planted a stiff slap on the comedian. The Academy Awards has banned Smith from attending Oscars for 10 years.

Amid such heckling and mishaps, the fans were wondering if ‘Bad Boys 4‘ will see Will Smith return or not. Martin Lawrence dispelled all glooms and announced that detectives Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowrey will ride again.

Martin Lawrence and Smith Are Bad Boys For Life, Quite Literally

Martin Lawrence and Will Smith appeared in the first ‘Bad Boys‘ movie, directed by Michael Bay, in 1995. During that time, both Smith and Lawrence were better known as sitcom stars. While Smith was known for his role in ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air‘, Lawrence was famous for ‘Martin.

Bad Boys‘ premiere in 1995 gave exceptional results, fuelling the kickoff for a franchise. In 2003 came ‘Bad Boys II‘ and in 2020, ‘Bad Boys For Life‘. The third part even managed to outgross the previous two movies when its global box office accumulated $426 million dollars. The series in total has brought a whopping $840 million dollars to the global box office.

The movie is an important part of who Lawrence and Smith are. Lawrence told Ebony, “It was big, for us to come together and prove that we can deliver, and we can pull people into the box office — that two Black stars, two sitcom stars, could make money at the box office [was huge].” Very rightfully, Will Smith’s status as an actor and a sterling action hero was strongly established due to his performance in ‘Bad Boys‘.

In the same interview, when the concern regarding Sony extinguishing the franchise over the Oscars scandal was brought up, Martin Lawrence clearly brushed aside the notion. The actor’s words, “We got one more at least“, were a promise enough that Will Smith isn’t going anywhere, at least for ‘Bad Boys 4‘.
