“You’re A Little Young To Be Directing A Movie”: ‘Stranger Things’ Actor Finn Wolfhard Was Discouraged By Financiers To Make His Slasher Comedy Film

Finn Woldhard‘s transition to filmmaking was blocked by the struggle to find financing. The ‘Stranger Things’ alum has co-written and co-directed ‘Hell Of A Summer’ with Billy Bryk. But given how young Finn and Billy are, studios weren’t exactly lining up to offer money and support to the duo.

While making the film was a struggle from day one, the young actor is proud that his project didn’t rot in development hell. He and Billy Bryk knew the difficulties of making a feature film. But the lack of experience and outside support didn’t discourage them from telling their story.

Hollywood continues to remain skeptical of its up-and-coming talents. Finn Wolfhard, who has now added writer-director to his resume, faced difficulties finding financiers for his film ‘Hell Of A Summer.’ He co-wrote and co-directed the slasher comedy film with his friend and collaborator Billy Bryk.

However, making his directorial debut wasn’t easy for the ‘Stranger Things’ actor. He told Entertainment Weekly about financers not having faith in him and Bryk because of their lack of experience. Wolfhard told the outlet, “That’s what everyone said when we tried to get money for this movie. They’re like, ‘You’re a little young to be directing a movie.’ I’m like, ‘Yep.’ Oh my God, they gave money to two kids to make a crazy [movie].’ Not to downplay it, I’m incredibly proud of it, but it was a crazy thing.”

Due to ongoing WGA strikes, the production of the fifth and final season of ‘Stranger Things’ has been put on hold. Finn Wolfhard told Entertainment Weekly about being excited to work on the show’s last season,” I think I’m really antsy to start because I’m a fan of the show first and foremost. So I’m excited, obviously, to just see where every character’s journey takes them and everything like that.”

On the other hand, the Canadian multi-hyphenate doesn’t want to dwell on the show’s approaching end. He told the outlet, “I’ve tried not to think about it or process how sad it’s gonna be, obviously, but it’s gonna be a graduation of sorts for all of us, for the cast and a lot of the crew, too.” Finn Wolfhard’s ‘Stranger Things’ fame has come at a price. Earlier this year, he admitted to having panic attacks on the set.
