Buckingham Palace is almost ready after a decade of renovation and a price tag of nearly $500 million. Most people expected King Charles to finally move into the famous royal residence once the work was complete.

Instead, a new report claims the monarch has no intention of living there, and the decision is already creating fresh controversy. So why would a King turn down Britain’s most iconic palace after such an expensive makeover?

King Charles and Queen Camilla have reportedly decided to keep Clarence House as their main London home even after Buckingham Palace completes its 10-year refurbishment next March. Rather than becoming the King’s private home, the palace will continue serving as the monarchy’s main working headquarters and the venue for major royal ceremonies.

The decision has surprised many people because Buckingham Palace has long been seen as the official home of Britain’s monarchs. Critics argue it is difficult to justify spending nearly $500 million to modernize the building if the King has no plans to live there.

People close to the royal household say the decision has nothing to do with the renovation. According to one insider, “The King has never liked the idea of living in what he calls a ‘goldfish bowl.’ He has always bristled at being treated like a museum exhibit in the middle of a tourist attraction, and Buckingham Palace, in his mind, is exactly that.”

The same source said Charles has always felt much more comfortable at Clarence House and Windsor. Explaining why, the insider added, “He feels more at ease at Clarence House and Windsor, where he can work and live without feeling that every window and corridor is part of a permanent public spectacle.”

People close to the King say he has preferred more private homes for many years. They believe Clarence House gives him a better balance between carrying out royal duties and enjoying a home away from constant public attention.

Even after the renovation ends, Buckingham Palace will remain one of the monarchy’s most important buildings. It will continue hosting state banquets, official receptions, investitures, and other major royal events. Besides, it will also serve as the administrative headquarters of the royal household.

The King’s decision has drawn criticism from Labor peer and former Public Accounts Committee chair Baroness Margaret Hodge. She believes the situation raises serious questions about how public money has been spent.

Speaking about the refurbishment, Hodge said, “They’ve spent £370 million ($488 million) on doing up Buckingham Palace. They’re now not going to move back there.” When asked if she believed it was a problem, she replied, “I think it is.”

Hodge also pointed to the wider cost of supporting the monarchy. She referred to the Sovereign Grant, which is expected to rise to around $178 million. It is linked to income from the Crown Estate and the historic duchies. She described the combined amount as “one heck of a lot of money.”

Palace officials continue to defend the renovation project. They say the work was essential to modernize and protect Buckingham Palace regardless of who lives there. Even so, Charles’ reported decision to remain at Clarence House has added another chapter to the debate.
