The royal family has a long list when it comes to family milestones. And Prince William and Princess Kate’s wedding is one of the shiniest among all.
But now, a new reported claim suggests that Prince Charles was not happy when William proposed to Kate. In fact, he had an unexpected reaction.
Why King Charles Wasn’t Happy With William’s Proposal?
As you’ll remember, Prince William and Princess Kate announced their engagement on November 16, 2010, after they came back from their Kenya trip. While everyone was overjoyed with the news, even Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles had some reservations.

As the royal biographer Robert Jobson writes in his book ‘The Windsor Legacy: A Royal Dynasty of Secrets, Scandal, and Survival‘, “The palace announced William and Catherine’s wedding on April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey, a joyful event that would at last overshadow the sorrow of Diana’s funeral in 1997.”
According to Jobson, King Charles apparently had mixed feelings about one part of William’s proposal.
“Privately, Charles was surprised, even a little irritated, that William had proposed to Catherine using the same 12-carat Ceylon sapphire and diamond ring from Garrard’s 1981 catalog that he had presented to Diana on their engagement.”

King Charles Quickly Embraced the Happy News
Reportedly, William planned the proposal very secretly and didn’t let the news out until Kate said “yes”. There was no exception made even when it came to Queen Elizabeth II.
Once everything became official, William first phoned the Queen to announce that he and Catherine were now officially engaged.
And talking of King’s reported irritation; it apparently didn’t last long. As soon as the engagement became public, the attention quickly turned to celebrating the engagement of William and Kate.
More than a decade later, William and Kate remain at the heart of the royal family, and the sapphire engagement ring continues to be one of the most recognizable pieces of royal jewelry.
