The Hulu and Disney+ series, ‘The Bear‘, revolves around the character of chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, played by Jeremy Allen White. Carmy takes over his family’s sandwich shop. ‘The Original Beef of Chicagoland’ along with sous-chef Sydney, played by Ayo Edebiri, and his cousin Richie. The trio then makes it their aim to bring about a transformation in the world of fine dining. The motivation for this idea stems from the death of Carmy’s brother.
Though the story’s main narrative has its initial focus on Carmy’s character, it eventually partially shifts to Richie, portrayed by Moss-Bacharach. At one point, his character becomes crucial and takes the central stage in their joint quest for culinary excellence.
As the trio navigates their journey towards a planned goal, Richie and Carmi refer to each other as cousins. For a considerable number of episodes, the showmakers have not delved into the details of the relationship that Carmy and Richie share. It is for the audience to just presume that they are cousins from what they refer to each other as.
It is revealed much later in the show that though the two call each other cousins, there is no blood relation between Carmy and Richie. In a rather poignant moment during the first season, Sydney questions Richie about his familial connection with Carmy, and he clarifies that they are not related by blood.
