Some actors are just meant to do certain roles. Steve Carell playing the boss of the Dunder Mifflin paper company on ‘The Office’ is one of them. However, Michael Scott was meant to be played by someone else initially. And it was none other than ‘Breaking Bad’ star Bob Odenkirk.
The actor recently opened up about losing the role on the ‘Office Ladies‘ podcast. But Bob is not much shaken about losing the role to Carell since he feels he is better suited to the role. After all, everything works out for the best!
Bob Odenkirk Opens Up About Losing ‘The Office’ Role
With multiple awards and nominations, Bob Odenkirk playing Saul Goodman in ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’ was the best thing that happened to him. But he might have been the face of ‘The Office‘s Michael Scott. However, the role went to Steve Carell. But Odenkirk is happy about it.
“I am, in a strange way, a very earnest person for a person in comedy,” Odenkirk told hosts Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey. “I am oddly earnest, and … it’s one of the reasons I think Steve Carell is a better, you know — is the one who got the role.” He continued on the ‘Office Ladies‘ podcast, “I think I bring with me a little bit too much earnest seriousness.”
Odenkirk said, “And it’s just kinda there. And there’s nothing I can do about it except play other roles where it’s helpful to have that.” Bob Odenkirk is aware that he is made for more dramatic and dark roles. “You just are looking for the darkness [in me], and that’s actually great in drama,” he said. “That’s a plus, you know? But in comedy, it’s not a plus,” Odenkirk added.

Bob Odenkirk Still Got To Live His ‘The Office’ Dreams
Although he missed his chance of playing Michael Scott, Bob Odenkirk still lived out his ‘The Office’ dreams. In the show’s ninth and final season, Odenkirk appears in a cameo role that is very similar to Michael Scott.
When Pam considers a job at a Philadelphia real estate company to be closer to her husband in the ninth season, she meets Mark Franks. Franks is played by Odenkirk. The ‘Better Call Saul‘ star revealed that his guest role was a chance to “show people what I would have done” in the role of Michael. However, he said that his performance was a “tribute to Steve” since “my character was meant to be very much a version of what Steve had invented when he played the character.”
