Usually, the television and films based on Christmas and its spirit portray an ideal situation or world. It showed how hopeful the world can be during the festival. Be it the classics like ‘Miracle on the 34th Street’ or the hallmark films, However, the modern-day sitcoms showed the chaos that goes into celebrating the festival, but ‘Modern Family’ was different.
Many sitcoms revolve around families, but ‘Modern Family’ always tried to push the envelope with each episode and character in this madness of the Dunphy, Prichett, and Pritchett-Tucker families. It showed resilience, acceptance, and triumph, and it made us feel good about making mistakes because that’s how we learn! Out of all the episodes, the ones revolving around festivals like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas got another side of the family altogether.

6) The Old Man And The Tree
Like every episode, this Christmas special episode in season five of ‘Modern Family’ ensues chaos! Phil is determined to run the distance from his house to Canada on an epileptic machine. Manny and Jay go out to find a perfect Christmas tree in the forest. Haley and Alex go out as an elf and Mrs. Claus in the mall.
Cam takes Lily to a charity event. Claire bonds with Gloria’s mother. What can go wrong? But things go haywire. What is Christmas without crazy moments? However, there are humanizing moments in the episode, like Claire talking her heart out about how she misses Diddy during Christmas. When Cam accidentally goes to a charity event for homeless people, they give away the gifts to them. A signature, typical ‘Modern Family’ episode.
5) Undeck The Halls
This is the first Christmas episode of the family that the audience witnessed in the tenth episode of season one. While the makers focus on all three families’ shenanigans, the Dunphy household is the star of the episode. It is Gloria and Manny’s first Christmas with Jay, and they try to celebrate it the Colombian way, but Jay, being Jay, is adamant about not trying to change anything about the festival.
Cam and Mitch help the mall Santa after they fire him from his job, and Cam tries to get back at his Caroling group for firing him. The Dunphy household is trying to find what caused a hole in the sofa. No one comes forward to accept who did it, as the parents declare that they will cancel Christmas. However, it is endearing to see the siblings take the blame on them.
4) White Christmas
In the ninth episode of the seventh season, the families book a cabin to fulfill Gloria’s dream of a White Christmas. However, disappointment hits them, as the place is very hot and does not have a Christmas vibe.
The families have to let a stranger be a part of their Christmas, who is an MIT professor and helps Alex realize how important family is other than school work. Both Mitch and Cam are also trying to do the ‘Silent Night’ justice after the previous year’s disaster. Jay also announces the heir of the Pritchett closets, which creates confusion.
However, two tropes really make the episode fun, one of which is one where Manny and Luke try to scare Lily, but Luke ends up being the victim of the prank. The other one is when Andy and Haley’s secret gets caught by the family, which coincides with the arrival of her fiancée.

3) Stuck In A Moment
Haley and Dylan find out that she is pregnant, but they have not told the family yet. So, the two decided Christmas was the best time to announce the news. The episode arrives in the tenth season of ‘Modern Family’, which brings a liveliness to an otherwise dull season. In the episode, Christmas gets shifted to different houses.
Jay and Gloria’s house gets attacked by a venomous spider. There is another mall Santa trope incorporated by the makers. However, the whole chaos between Haley and Dylan trying to tell the family about the big news as Alex turns pale due to anxiety is a fun ride to be on.
2) Express Christmas
Undoubtedly, the earlier seasons of ‘Modern Family’ were some of the most entertaining, lively, and life-affirming ones. Newer ideas were being explored by the makers with sleek execution due to the cast’s impeccable camaraderie. One of the comedic and sitcom genius episodes was that of ‘Express Christmas’ in the third season.
The Dunphys, Pritchetts, and Pritchett-Tuckers gather at Jay’s pool and find out that everyone will meet each other after the holidays. However, Phil proposes the idea of having an express Christmas. The family gets divided into teams—Claire and Haley are given the task of fetching the gifts; Cam and Jay are together to wrap the gifts; Phil and Manny take care of groceries; Alex and Mitch are given the duty of getting the Christmas tree; and Gloria and Luke are tasked with getting the doll given by Diddy to children.
What will an episode of ‘Modern Family’ be without chaos? Phil’s plan does not go as he thought. The Christmas tree gets ruined, Jay’s gift is destroyed due to a tazer, and the turkey does not arrive at the kitchen table. However, the episode gives off a fuzzy feeling as we see some uncommon pairings, which lightens up the screen.
1) The Last Christmas
It is a sappy goodbye at the Pritchett-Tucker home as everyone arrives at their house with news of going away. However, it was not all sobby. There is a lot of drama that is caused during the party.
Luke and Manny fight over a girl; Mitch is suspicious of Cam; Jay tries to convince Claire to be a part of his dog bed business; and Gloria ditches Phil and tries to join the rival realtor.
Everything just gets messy at the table, but the moment arrives when everyone tells their respective news, which brings them together and creates a memorable episode in an otherwise gloomy season.
