‘House Of The Dragon’: Why Rhaenys Doesn’t Bend The Knee To Queen Rhaenyra At Her Coronation

The fact that they were born women is what restrained Rhaenys Targaryen and Rhaenyra Targaryen from ascending the Iron Throne. In the series ‘House of the Dragon’, it can be seen as these women present strong demeanors and fight against their odds. And like the real queens they are, the two support each other in the existing patriarchal community.

The finale of the series saw the last round of ordeals before the battle starts. Though there was no bloodshed, there was this hasty need to form allies and gather forces. It also had a scene where Rhaenyra was crowned with her father’s crown. At this point, everyone kneels to the new Queen while someone stands at a distance and smiles.

The answer would be a yes. Even though Rhaenys Targaryen doesn’t kneel in front of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, she does give her approval. For the past 20 years, Rhaenyra had been under the watchful eyes of Rhaenys as she evaluated the Targaryen’s worth to be a queen. Rhaenys had lost the crown due to her gender, but now another woman was fighting for what was rightfully hers.

The princess stands back and smiles as she sees Rhaenyra being crowned. She is happy to see people bend down to a woman. The authority that the Queen asserts over Daemon and the restraint she exhibits about waging a war all add to her individual value. After telling Corlys that they’ll be supporting Rhaenyra, she lets the Queen move forward with the battle.

Princess Rhaenyra was keen on gathering allies in a peaceful manner. But her son Luke pays the ultimate price after a futile attempt to find an ally in the Baratheons. He is killed by the dragon Vhagar, ridden by Alicent’s son, Aemond. In the same episode, it is seen that the Queen had miscarried her sixth child. Thus the loss of two children on a single day.

Rhaenyra’s relationship with her husband was also not so smooth. Daemon was not happy to know that his brother had shared the Song of Fire and Ice prophecy with Rhaenyra. A family secret he refused to share with his wild brother. Thus there are so many problems- personal and political that Rhaenyra needs to sort out to be a strong Queen.
