In Which Episodes Did ‘The Simpsons’ Predict The Super Bowl?

The Simpsons‘ is America’s longest-running prime-time show for over three decades. It is known for its scary predictions and satirical comedy. The series has also spawned numerous comic book series, video games, books, and other related media, as well as a billion-dollar merchandising industry. A feature-length film, ‘The Simpsons Movie’, was released in theaters worldwide on July 27, 2007.

The animated series revolves around an American family consisting of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. It is set in the fictional town of Springfield and mostly parodies the American lifestyle, society, and human conditions. ‘The Simpsons’ are renewed for seasons 33 and 34. Matt Groening created this dysfunctional family and named the characters after his own family members, substituting Bart for his own name; he thought Simpson was a funny name as it sounded similar to “simpleton”. But did you know they predicted the Super Bowl as well?

When ‘The Simpsons’ Predicted The Super Bowl

Not once, but thrice the Simpsons predicted the outcome of the Super Bowl. Interestingly as exciting as it sounds, it is equally creepy. Lisa Simpson, an eight-year-old knows a winning team when she sees one. She was right three years in a row back in the ’90s. And a very memorable 2017 halftime show starring a flying Lady Gaga. Now to think of it, the show has been right about the Super Bowl a total of four times.

    1. 1992 Super Bowl Prediction

Jan 23, 1992, the day from which the famous Simpson’s Super Bowl prediction started with the “Lisa the Greek” episode. In this episode, Lisa and her dad, Homer team up for some sports gambling. The bet placed is that if the Washington Redskins became the Super Bowl champions in Super Bowl XXVI, then she will still love Homer and if not then she won’t.

Three days later, the Redskins beat the Bills, 37-24. Lucky for the family, the father and daughter duo go on a hike together. At first, these predictions were simply counted as coincidences. Later the speculations increased questioning the writers of the show.

    2. 2017 Super Bowl Half Time

Everyone aware of ‘The Simpsons‘ will never forget the 2019 Super Bowl Half time. In season 23, episode 22, ‘Lisa goes Gaga’ the Simpsons again predicted the future. Around five years later, it certainly looked a lot like that episode when Gaga descended on Houston’s NRG Stadium for the 2017 Super Bowl Halftime show. Minus the pyrotechnic top the show imagined, the aesthetics were quite familiar: the harness, the silver outfit, the fact that she was airborne, and the drones that hung in the air.

John Ortved, the author of ‘The Simpsons: An Uncensored, Unauthorized History‘, says the prediction is not so surprising, after all. “It doesn’t take Tiresias to guess that Gaga, one of the biggest music stars, might play a Super Bowl halftime show. And then look at the things that ended up being similar: she descended from the air, she sat at a piano, she had choreographed dance moves. All those things make complete sense,” he says.

Did The Simpsons Also Predict 2022 Super Bowl?

The Simpsons‘ reportedly predicted the Cincinnati Bengals will win the Super Bowl. On Sunday, February 13th, 2022, the American football team played against the Los Angeles Rams.

However, ‘The Simpsons‘ did not predict that the Bengals are expected to win the Super Bowl. There are three photographs that went viral: one of the team’s cheerleaders, Homer with “Go Bengals” scrawled over his tummy, and a news anchor with the caption “Bengals win Super Bowl!! Cin 34 LA 31.” While the photos were taken from genuine Simpsons episodes, the text forecasting a Super Bowl victory was inserted by a third party and did not appear in any of the show’s episodes. The Rams beat the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI on Sunday, February 13, with a score of 23-20.
