HBO is continuing to expand the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe. However, there have been several potential spin-offs that have slipped away. Every project that gets to production has another one that gets stuck in creative problems, shifting priorities, or tricky development issues.

But many of the cancelled ideas still remain among the most popular stories of fans.

One of the most surprising cancellations was that of Jon Snow himself. In 2022, HBO announced a sequel series to be based on Kit Harington’s beloved character, sparking huge excitement among fans. The project would have been a look at what happened to Jon after ‘Game of Thrones’.

The series was eventually discontinued after years of development. Harington says the creative team was unable to come up with a story that was compelling enough to warrant a return of the character.

For many fans, it was a disappointing outcome. The prospect of bringing him back was a logical next step in the narrative. And Jon is undoubtedly one of the most beloved characters in the franchise.

‘Bloodmoon’ And Flea Bottom Also Failed To Move Forward

‘Bloodmoon’ was another big loss, as it was a prequel that took place thousands of years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’. The project even had a pilot starring Naomi Watts, which was said to have cost millions of dollars. Even with that investment, HBO did not go ahead with the show.

The show would have covered the Age of Heroes and the origins of the White Walkers, and would have been one of the most ambitious ideas ever linked to the franchise. The same thing happened to ‘Flea Bottom’.

The show was set in King’s Landing’s infamous slums, and the series was meant to give viewers a street-level view of Westeros that they wouldn’t get from the main series. Sadly, before information about the story came out, HBO cancelled the project.

However, beyond cancelled shows, fan-favorite concepts such as Robert’s Rebellion and Arya Stark’s exploits west of Westeros are not part of HBO’s plans. It’s a reminder that development is not always a smooth process.

Some stories get to audiences; many don’t make it beyond the planning. Still, in a world as rich as Westeros, fans will likely continue imagining what could have been for years to come.
