Years after ‘Scandal‘ ended, fans still debate whether Olivia Pope and Fitzgerald Grant could really make their relationship work. Now, Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn have weighed in with their own update on the iconic couple.

Both stars seem convinced that Olivia and Fitz not only stayed together after the series finale but are also putting in the effort to keep their romance alive through couples therapy.

The future of Olivia and Fitz has remained a popular topic among ‘Scandal‘ fans ever since the ABC drama wrapped its seven-season run in 2018. During a recent reunion for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Washington and Goldwyn revisited the relationship that kept viewers talking for years.

Rather than imagining the former White House lovers drifting apart, Washington revealed that she sees them actively working on their marriage-like partnership. Her vision of the couple’s future immediately sparked agreement from her former costar.

The conversation came as the pair reunited while discussing their recent television projects. Washington recently starred in ‘Imperfect Women‘, while Goldwyn appeared in Hacks and Law & Order. Yet it did not take long before the discussion turned to Olivia and Fitz, proving that “Olitz” remains one of television’s most memorable romances.

Their relationship was never simple. Olivia Pope, a political fixer, and President Fitzgerald Grant spent years navigating scandals, power struggles, secrets, and repeated breakups. Despite that turbulent history, both actors believe the connection survived long after viewers last saw them.

Washington’s theory about the couple’s future centers on one important detail: professional help. She said she believes Olivia and Fitz are in couples therapy.

Goldwyn did not hesitate to agree. “Yes, regularly!” Goldwyn agreed. “Because they know that’s what they have to do to survive. But I think Fitz spent some time in Vermont. He needed to get out of the toxic patterns. … But I feel like he was very supportive of her trajectory — whether she became president of the United States or whatever her thing was, I feel like his real jones was to help this woman be, like … her best self.”

The therapy idea fits with a discussion the actors had about how fans now view the relationship differently than they did when the show originally aired. Washington pointed out that many viewers have started questioning whether Olivia and Fitz were actually a healthy couple.

People are so passionate about Olitz, still,” Washington said. “Also, have you noticed this thing online where some people are like, ‘Now that I’m older and I watch the relationship, I’m not sure how healthy it is.’ Have you seen any of that?

Goldwyn responded with a laugh. “They’re just figuring that out? Interesting!” Washington acknowledged those concerns but argued that the flaws were part of the appeal. “They weren’t the healthiest couple. That doesn’t mean they weren’t madly in love, but they had some difficulties, which is why people loved it,” she said.

Even after admitting the relationship had serious problems, neither actor sees Olivia and Fitz as a couple destined to fail. Goldwyn explained that he always viewed the foundation of their connection as genuine, which is why they kept finding their way back to each other throughout the series.
