‘The Boys’ May Be Undermining Its Own Ending With Franchise Setup

Over the years, ‘The Boys’ established its brand identity by deconstructing the superhero machine, ridiculing bloated franchises, incessant spin-offs, and commercial storytelling. It was that sharp edge that made it unique.

However, in its last season, there is an increasing feeling that the show is slowly straying into the same grounds that it used to mock. And the change is no longer subtle.

‘The Boys’ Season 5 Is Starting To Feel Like What It Once Mocked

It is not that the world of ‘The Boys’ is growing larger; that was nearly a given following the success of ‘Gen V’. Actually, that show was the one that demonstrated that the franchise could develop without losing its character. It was meaningful, new, and linked without overpowering the central plot. However, season 5 is different.

Rather than narrowing the storyline to an intense climax, certain aspects of the series, particularly in Episode 4, appear more preoccupied with laying the groundwork for future endeavors like ‘Vought Rising’.

You can sense the change of priorities. Scenes are lingering longer than they ought, not because they are adding to the plot at hand, but because they are preparing the way to the next scene.

That is a dangerous thing to do in the last season. This is the supposed payoff, the point at which all the four-season-long construction crashes down. When that momentum decelerates, even in the slightest, it is noticeable.

It is ironic here that it is difficult to miss. ‘The Boys’ earned a reputation by critiquing the way the superhero franchises thin out their stories to keep the machine going. It is now toying with the same tactic. It does not imply that the show has lost its edge altogether. The plot remains crisp, the characters remain strong, and there are still instances of brilliance.

However, something is not right. Rather than each scene leading to a resolution, some of them seem like placebos, or worse, previews of what is to come. It is there that frustration sets in. The resolution for all these characters must be tight, centered, and deserved after all they have been through.

It is not too late to make a U-turn. The last seasons are a difficult thing to do, and even the best shows can fail to land. However, if ‘The Boys’ wish to go out as hard as it came in, it must keep in mind what made it so effective in the first place. For now, it is walking a thin line, and the way it completes will determine which side it ends up on.
