‘The Boys’ season 5 is pulling the rug out from under everyone, and it is what it does best. Episode 6 isn’t only upping the ante, it’s turning the entire board upside down.
When it seemed Homelander was finally cornered, Soldier Boy makes a choice that turns things around, and it’s not like you think.
Why Soldier Boy’s Choice Makes Sense

The idea was straightforward on paper: don’t let the V-One get in Homelander’s hands. Even Soldier Boy appeared to be on board. However, when the time came, he did the exact opposite, giving over the very thing that would make his son almost invulnerable to death. It’s a perplexing decision. However, it makes sense when you examine the emotion behind it.

It was not a matter of strategy or power; it was a matter of Stormfront. Despite his hatred for Homelander, Soldier Boy’s attachment to her remains. In a frank admission, he reveals the truth: “I loved her more.” That one line says it all. Believe it or not, it wasn’t loyalty to his son that Homelander gave the V-One to; it was loyalty to her memory.
That’s what makes it disturbing. Soldier Boy doesn’t think about consequences or the chaos this could bring. He’s celebrating a rotten history. It’s not redemption, it’s regression. Now the rest of the world must suffer the consequences.
The Plan Falls Apart, But Not Completely

No one could have predicted this but Sister Sage. She was behind many pieces of strategy that were based on forecasting human behavior. However, there’s a catch: she underestimated something that’s simple and very human, emotional bias. She expected anger. She received devotion in return.

That misjudgment is everyone’s loss. Now Homelander is equipped with the V-One in his system, and the window to stop him is closed shut. The heroes are not only outnumbered, they feel outplayed. However, the thing is, this is by no means a checkmate. Not yet. The armour is still cracked.
Soldier Boy himself remains one of the few beings capable of neutralizing Homelander’s powers, which means his loyalty could become the deciding factor, again. Then there’s Ryan, a wildcard with terrifying potential, and Butcher, who appears more desperate than ever.
Yes, it’s pretty bad. Perhaps more dismal than ever. However, ‘The Boys’ flourishes in that place, where there is little hope, few choices, and a cost to every win. And the price is higher than ever right now.
