There are several differences between ‘The Last of Us‘ series and the namesake video game it has been adapted from. The game starts off on September 26, 2013, when the breakout starts and we see glimpses of his backstory. Then the rest of the game takes place in 2033.

In the show, we see an epilogue from 1968, then the breakout happens in 2003 followed by a 20-year gap. In the series, we take a closer look at Joel’s life in the quarantine zone and his relationship with Tess. All this is shown in passing in the video game.

In the game, an airborne version of the fungus called “spores” are a challenge for everyone. However, in the series, it does not exist. Instead, the makers made the fungus interconnected as one movement in a nerve can alert the mushroom zombies.

In the second episode, the zombies are alerted and they chase everyone at the capitol building. Tess, who is infected, sacrifices herself so that Ellie and Joel can leave. But in the game, her character is killed by the military.

Joel and Tess leave the quarantine zone to get the weapons in the game in exchange for Ellie. In the series, Joel’s main reason is his brother Tommy, whom he has not seen for a while.

In the game, Tommy joins the Fireflies which causes a rift between the two. But in the show, we don’t know why the two separated.
