The Real Reason Black Noir Feels “Off” In ‘The Boys’ Season 5

In Short
  • Black Noir II's unusual behavior in 'The Boys' Season 5 has sparked fan speculation about his character's true nature.
  • The show appears to be intentionally leading viewers towards a popular comic twist involving Black Noir as a clone of Homelander.
  • However, the narrative suggests a more sinister explanation, with Homelander potentially using fear and control rather than cloning.

The Boys’, season 5, is evidently enjoying playing with fans’ nerves. Amidst rising stakes and power dynamics that are becoming more and more unstable, the show is teasing a mystery that is almost too familiar.

The abrupt silence and bizarre actions of Black Noir II have led to a flood of speculation. And if you’ve read the comics, your mind must have gone immediately to the same conclusion. However, the point is that that is what the show may desire.

Black Noir has never been an ominous presence, yet this version is somehow different in a manner that cannot be overlooked. The latter form of Black Noir, which came after the death of the first, was more human. He was talkative, expressive, even strangely charming under the mask. And that is what makes his present behavior so disturbing.

Now? He doesn’t speak. He vanishes without leaving any trace. He simply feels off. This, of course, has prompted fans to theorize about the notorious comic twist in which Noir turns out to be a clone of Homelander, a secret failsafe invented by Vought. It is one of the most outrageous twists of the source material, and the show appears to be pushing the audience towards it.

And it is working. The hints are only too clear to be accidental. The silence, the secrecy, the timing, it all fits a little too well. However, that is where the suspicion comes in. When a show gives you a theory this clean, it is generally setting you up for something.

Why The Clone Twist Doesn’t Add Up

The clone theory is very tempting, but it collapses when subjected to closer examination. For starters, Eric Kripke has previously made it clear that the series isn’t interested in directly adapting that particular storyline. And since the show has already deviated so much in relation to the comics, it would be logical to keep that promise.

And there is also a problem of narrative logic. A clone secretly substituting Noir without Homelander being aware of it would be out of place, particularly since he is practically the ruler of everything around him. The more plausible reason is, perhaps, more basic, and more sinister. Homelander doesn’t need a clone to assert control.

He would just make it happen if he wanted Noir silent. Whether through fear, punishment, or something even more brutal, that aligns far more with who he is becoming this season. This is what makes this plot interesting. It is not a matter of imitating the comics; it is a matter of toying with your expectations.
