In an interview, Theron has spoken openly about the incident that happened when she was just 15. Her mother, Gerda Jacoba Aletta Martiz, shot and killed her father to protect them both.

Now, years later, she says she has found peace with it. “I think these things should be talked about because it makes other people not feel alone,” she shared. She also admitted how isolated she once felt: “I never knew about a story like that. When this happened to us, I thought we were the only people. I’m not haunted by this stuff anymore.”

The ‘Mad Max: Fury Road‘ star made it clear that her father’s alcoholism made the situation dangerous. She understands that the events of that night were not just tragic; they were about survival.

Charlize Theron explained how everything began with a small moment that quickly escalated. “I had to pee really badly. So I ran into the house to get to the toilet, and he took that as me being rude,” she said. Not greeting her father upset him, and in his intoxicated state, he reacted strongly. He kept saying, “Why didn’t you stop? Who do you think you are?”.

Sensing danger, she tried to avoid him. “I knew he was mad at me. So I said to her, ‘When he eventually decides to come home, please tell him I’m asleep,’” she said. She went to her room, turned off the lights, and waited. Watching the driveway, she felt something was wrong. “The way that he drove into that property that night… I just knew something bad was going to happen.”

Things escalated quickly. Her father “broke into the house” with his brother and even used a gun to get through the doors. “He shot through the steel doors to get in, making it very clear that he was going to kill us,” she said. Her mother rushed to get her gun, and they tried to hold the bedroom door shut together. “The two of us were holding the door with our bodies because there wasn’t a lock on it.

Then came the gunfire. “He just stepped back and started shooting through the door. And this is the crazy thing: Not one bullet hit us,” she said. Still, his words made his intentions clear: “I’m going to kill you tonight… I’m going to go to the safe. I’m going to get the shotgun.”

Her mother had no choice but to act. “He walked to the safe, and my mom pulled the door open,” she said. Her uncle ran, but her mother fired a shot that ricocheted and injured him. Then she followed her father and shot him before he could get more weapons.

After the incident, Theron said her mother chose not to dwell on what had happened. “She picked right up,” she shared. “The next morning, she sent me to school. She was just like, ‘We’re going to move on.’ Not necessarily the healthiest thing, but it worked for us.”

The actor explained that her mother didn’t want her to relive the trauma. “She wanted me to forget about it. She didn’t want me to sit in it. We didn’t have therapists around, so in her head the best therapy was, ‘We’ve got to move on.’

Over time, Theron came to understand the deeper impact of that night; not just the fear, but the protection behind it. “It really did change our relationship,” she said. “We were always very close. We felt like a team. But that night changed it because in retrospect… I realized that she saved my life. Which is a big thing.

It’s definitely a story of survival for Theron, and she believes it should be told so others don’t feel alone.
