For the longest time, fans believed that Queen Maeve was due for one final appearance in the last season of ‘The Boys’. After all, she is one of the only formidable opponents in the show who can stand next to Billy Butcher and directly challenge Homelander.

So when the season finally wrapped up, and there were still no signs of Maeve, fans were disappointed and confused. Now, Eric Kripke has finally come forward with an explanation.

Why Couldn’t Maeve Return For ‘The Boys’ Finale?

In a recent interview with TV Insider, showrunner Eric Kripke opened up about Queen Maeve’s absence and revealed that the decision ultimately came down to actress Dominique McEligott herself. Kripke explained that he had every intention to bring back Maeve for the final battle and personally reached out to McElligott early in the development. He shared that the two have a close bond and occasionally keep in touch via email to check in on each other.

Kripke said, “Dom and I email a couple of times every six to eight months or so, and she checked in on me after the Palisades fires”. “We throw each other emails, and I said very early because I wanted to know whether we were building for it, ‘Would you be open to coming back for a day, and here are the dates'”.

Unfortunately, McElligott respectfully declined. Kripke revealed that she has largely stepped away from acting altogether. He was disappointed but also stated that there was absolutely no tension between them. The decision was ultimately pleasant and respectful. “So, that was honestly it. It was a very pleasant, non-controversial moment, you know?” He emphasized.

Maeve’s Story Has Already Reached A Natural Ending

Queen Maeve was last seen during the finale of Season 3, where she sacrificed herself to absorb the depowering blast. Maeve survived but was left powerless, forcing her to go off-grid with her girlfriend.

The ambiguity behind McElligott’s involvement in the show obviously made it harder for writers to decide what to do with Queen Maeve. Moreover, there were hints of her potential return, as she was featured in “previously on” clips that referenced her involvement throughout the season. But now it seems like those were only intended as a homage.

Alongside Billy Butcher, Kimiko, and Ryan, Maeve certainly would have fit naturally into the final confrontation against Homelander. But that is actually not an essential ending to the story.

Instead of confronting Homelander, Maeve chose to live a free and normal life with her girlfriend Elena. Moreover, we don’t know how she could have regained her power to join the fight. Ultimately, her character arc did meet a peaceful ending at the end of season 3.

Maeve Is Passing The Torch To Annie And Marie In ‘The Boys’ Season 5

Even though Maeve couldn’t appear in season 5, Eric Kripke insisted on keeping her legacy alive. Brilliantly, this proved to be the perfect opportunity for the show to explore how Maeve can pass the torch to Annie and, eventually, to Marie.

Kripke shared that this is the reason why “she shows up in the recap“. It was eventually “a way to show that Maeve passed the torch to Annie, and now Annie is passing the torch to Marie, and that there’s this lineage of strong women that started with Maeve.”

In one of the most emotional moments of the series finale, we see Annie sitting with Marie, reflecting on her complicated relationship with Maeve. Annie recalls promising never to end up as emotionally detached as her. But over time, ultimately slipped into that same exhaustion and hopelessness.

Just as Annie did to Maeve, Marie reminded Annie this time that she needs to keep fighting. This was especially memorable because we were all reminded of Annie and Maeve’s connection during their darkest moments. Ultimately, there could have been no better ending to this story.

Still, hopes are still up. Kripke has hinted at an upcoming spinoff, ‘The Boys: Mexico’, which may take up right after the events of the finale. It is all up to McElligott now. If she ever decides to return to acting someday, we might get a glimpse of Queen Maeve. But for now, we must stay satisfied knowing she is somewhere in ‘The Boys’ universe, happily living with Elena.
