Why Did Alicent Hightower Swap Her Green Dress For Blue In ‘House Of The Dragon’ Season 2 Finale? Significance Of The Color For Her And Rhaenyra Explained

Alicent Hightower has given up her signature green color and opted for a blue wardrobe. In the season finale of ‘House of the Dragon‘, Alicent comes to Dragonstone to negotiate the Green Council’s surrender to Rhaenyra Targaryen. And to make terms she dons a deep blue cloak over a lighter blue dress. Like any royalty, this dowager Queen’s wardrobe also holds significance.

Throughout the series, Alicent, played by Olivia Cooke, wears different colors either to reflect her allegiance or to show her state of mind. Initially, when she was married to Viserys, she wore the Targaryen red and gold. By the end of season one, she embraces the green, House Hightower colors, when she feels betrayed by Rhaenyra. House Hightower lighted green fire when they called their banners to war. Now Alicent has again chosen to change her wardrobe.

After Aemond Targaryen replaced his brother, Aegon II Targaryen as King Regent, he slowly started to push his mother out of the Small Council. Alicent feels undermined when they almost unanimously deny her the throne because she is a woman. “What would it say if, in response to Rhaenyra’s crowning, we raised up a woman of our own?” Larys Strong points out. Later in the season, Aemond asks his mother to give up her seat at the small council and concentrate on more “domestic pursuits”.

In the episode, ‘The Red Sowing‘, Alicent retreats to the forest’s tranquility. Here she wears a deep blue dress and removes it to swim in a simple white sheath. The imagery is effortless. Alicent is undermined and now stripped of power. She wants to shed the responsibilities of her House and her family. Yet when she strolls in blue, she is surrounded by the green of the forest. She is in an inescapable situation that is ironically created by herself.

In The Queen Who Ever Was episode, Alicent travels to meet Rhaenyra at Dragonstone. She wears a light blue dress with a deep blue cloak over it. But why choose blue when she could have gone for any other color? After all, she is royalty. Alicent clothes reminisce the times when she and Rhaenyra were young and closest. When Rhaenyra asks her to ride with Syrax or when she tears a page from the book, Alicent is wearing a light blue dress.

When Alicent comes to discuss her family’s surrender, she comes as a friend from the past. She offers Rhaenyra to march to King’s Landing and take the Iron Throne when Aemond is away with Vhagar to the Riverlands. She exchanges her son, Aegon’s life to run away with her daughter Heleana Targaryen. During the meeting, the stars and symbols of the Faith of the Seven, an important part of Alicent, are also missing. Alicent wishes to give up her status and with it her responsibilities.
