Few Spider-Man villains have made as big an impact as Doctor Octopus, and that’s exactly why it’s time to let him go, says actor Alfred Molina.

The most intriguing part of Molina’s comeback was that it came so unexpectedly. After filming Doc Ock’s apparent death in Spider-Man 2, the actor assumed his journey with the character was over. Instead, almost 20 years later, Marvel’s multiverse concept and advances in visual effects enabled him to bring his character back to a new generation of fans.

The success of ‘No Way Home’ indicated how popular the character is. Molina’s comeback was well received by audiences, and the movie became one of the highest-grossing superhero films ever made.

Regardless of whether Doctor Octopus is to be seen again or not, Molina’s name will forever be a part of Spider-Man history. The character of Otto Octavius is one of the most revered comic-book villains of all time. And while Marvel has taught fans not to say never, Molina appears quite content to know that Doc Ock’s story has an ending worthy of the character.

After his memorable appearance in ‘Spider-Man 2’ and his surprise return in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, Molina has now given some indication that he might be interested in returning as Doc Ock. The actor says he would be happy to come back if Marvel called him.

However, he doesn’t believe it’s needed. His words seem to show an increasing respect for the character’s legacy and the different eras of Spider-Man that Doc Ock has already had.

I think we might have to just leave Doc Ock in a nice, prominent place in the rogue’s gallery of villains, but honestly, if they came knocking on my door and said we’d love you to do it again, I would do it again, no doubt. I doubt if it’ll happen, though,” he told Variety.

After seeing iconic villains from other Spider-Man movies, Molina’s Doctor Octopus was one of the most memorable characters in the film. The actor easily slipped back into the role almost 20 years after his first time as Otto Octavius in Sam Raimi’s hugely popular 2004 film.

However, now, Molina believes the character has a special place in Spider-Man history and may not require another resurgence. He said he’s open to the idea, but has proposed that Doc Ock deserves to be a permanent member of Spider-Man’s villains without the need for further appearances.

Molina is happy with the footprint his Otto Octavius has left. He also gave the character in ‘No Way Home’ a redemption that many villains in comic books don’t get.
