‘Yellowjackets’ Season 2: How Did Javi Survive In The Wilderness?

Yellowjackets‘ episode ‘Old Wounds‘ provided more shocking twists and turns and moments of television fold. But what everyone will talk about until the next episode is Javi being alive. His not dying is a huge relief to his elder brother Adam. But he has unknowingly become a pawn in Lottie’s game.

Taisaa still resists the supernatural, while Nat and Lottie get into a contest with each other. The mistrust still exists as Nat gets one step closer to finding out the truth about Travis’s death. In the present timeline, Shauna admits murder to her daughter, Taissa finds Van, and Misty and Walter continue looking for Nat.

Has Javi been living underground all this time?

Young Taissa  (Jasmin Savoy Brown) continues to be guided by waking dreams as she finds another tree with the scary cult symbol. While Van (Liv Hewson) asks her to lean into the mystery, Taissa is far from being a believer. However, Van maps all the trees where the symbols were sighted to find the next location. As Van and Taissa investigate, they find a shell-shocked Javi (Luciano Leroux). Alive, but not well.

Last seen during the group’s deranged psychedelic trip (no thanks to Misty), he seems to have survived the brutal winter. But where has he been all the time? On a closer look, the episode reveals itself. Van finds moss with melted snow on the ground, suggesting the presence of an underground bunker or a series of tunnels. Thanks to all the internet sleuths, the possibility of mercury poisoning can explain everything from the dripping sound to Javi’s disoriented state.

Remember the red river from Lottie’s visions in the first season? That’s probably mercury deposits from an abandoned mine shaft finding their way to the river, meaning the group could be suffering from a touch of mercury poisoning. Javi, living underground, is closer to it, experiencing all its symptoms which might explain his confusion about being reunited. It also describes the group going through various mood swings. It also makes the audience wonder if Taissa is unconsciously mapping out the location of this abandoned mine.

Yellowjackets’ ends with Taissa visiting Van (above image) in the present-day timeline.

In the present day, the plot begins to thicken about Lottie’s (Simone Kessel)  visions as she makes an unscheduled stop at her therapist. All she wants is to ramp up with dosage to numb the pain. But when confronted with finding meaning in visions, he shuns them by calling them ‘not real.’ Being a beacon of hope is tiring, but Lottie wants to keep being it to save herself.

Taissa (Tawny Cypress) is still discombobulated, deciding to hitchhike to the West. With her “problem” getting out of hand, he visits Van (Lauren Ambrose). Maybe Van can talk her through it before what’s inside her takes over and becomes an enormous monster. Misty and Walter (Christina Ricci and Elijah Wood) catch another break in their quest to track down the cult and find Natalie.

As Callie (Sarah Desjardins) starts acting out, Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) comes clean and reveals all her secrets. She still refrains from talking about what Yellowjackets did to survive, hoping to break it to her in a more composed frame of mind. However, Jeff (Warren Kole) is stupified by Shauna’s honesty, as she might have made their daughter a murder accomplice. Callie, befriended by an undercover cop, could be her family’s downfall.
