‘Yellowjackets’ Season 2: What Is The Meaning Of Lottie’s Beehive Monologue?

In the ‘Yellowjackets‘ episode ‘Digestif,’ the daze of cannibalism is starting to wear off. The group struggles with their transformation, and Taissa’s sleepwalking gets worse. Misty befriends another outcast from the group, and a terrified Coach Ben remembers his life back home. This is the first time we have learned something about him.

In the present timeline, Nat hangs around Lottie’s cult/wellness center. Shauna continues breaking bad, and Misty finally meets Walter. Lottie gives an eerily soothing monologue about the bees that justifies their acts of horror as survival. But, like the bees, is there more bloodshed in store for the surviving Yellowjackets?

No amount of healing can erase the monstrous acts they did in their past. But the surviving members of the plane crash keep hiding and smiling until it cracks them from the inside out. They can never be forgiven. Lottie (Simone Kessel) introduces Nat (Juliette Lewis) to his bees and tells a familiar story that still echoes in her mind.

Lottie says worker bees will often vibrate around their queen in winter to keep her warm. As a Yellowjacket, Jackie (Ella Purnell) was a queen bee. However, she lost everyone’s vote of confidence. She leaves the group’s fortification and sleeps outside when she learns of Shauna’s (Sophie Nélisse) betrayals. It was obvious she would die. But on the other hand, her being alive would deprive them of resources.

Hence, her taking one for the teams sustained Yellowjackets for a while. Jackie is replaced by Lottie, who guides them through a terrible winter. Jackie’s beloved All-American schoolgirl persona has no use in the wilderness, and she pays the price for it. But when we return to the bees towards the show’s end, Lottie sees a blood-filled vision where all her bees are dead.

Back to their senses, Yellowjackets are hit by the sober realization of their actions. It doesn’t matter how careful they will be with whatever remains of Jackie since there’s no going back from cannibalism. Besides, their chances of finding fruit and berries are pretty low. Everyone feels strange and wishes for a sane moment. It leads to them throwing a baby shower for Shauna and the newborn, which is of no help.

Shauna can’t help but feel terrible. Despite the fights and betrayals, she and Jackie were close. In her despair, she seeks Lottie, who tells her each one is to blame. While Lottie’s (Courtney Eaton) standing in the group gains support, Taissa (Jasmin Savoy Brown) continues to be haunted by the ghost of The Man With No Eyes. We also learn more about Coach Ben, who almost didn’t get on the plane to stay with his partner. Misty (Samantha Hanratty) bonds with her friend, who talks to her about acting.

In the present day, Misty (Christina Ricci) finds another kindred soul. The Citizen Detective (Elijah Wood), aka Walter, collaborates with her to investigate the murder of Adam (Peter Gadiot). Taissa’s (Tawny Cypress) reflection seems to have become a separate, dangerous entity. It still whispers to her, calling her to seek Van (Lauren Ambrose). Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) continues to violently and awkwardly lash out. She goes after the men who stole her vehicle, scaring the bejesus out of them with the intricacies of peeling a human skin. It’s cruel yet fascinating to see how long each can hold on.
