Why Was Gon Unable To Use Nen At The End Of The Anime?

Hunter x hunter‘ is one of the most popular animes in the shonen genre. It was written by Togashi Yoshihiro and the manga is still ongoing. The manga got its anime adaptation once in 1999 and then again in 2011. The 2011 adaptation is more thorough and follows the manga to a certain extent.

Hunter X Hunter‘ follows a young boy named Gon, who lives on Whale Island. Gon wants to search for his father and becomes a Hunter as his father is one. He finds Killua, the son of the Zoldyck family and their adventures begin. Gon loses his ability to use nen at the end of the Chimera Ant Arc. Here’s why.

The Chimera Ant Arc was the longest and most intense arc in ‘Hunter X Hunter‘. Kite was kidnapped by Neferpitou in front of Gon and Killua early in the arc. Gon is hell-bent on getting revenge and getting Pitou to heal Kite. He finally confronts Pitou near the end of the arc and he learns that Kite is dead and Pitou was using him as a puppet. Gon goes feral at that and gets angry.

He summons his entire aura and makes a trade that he doesn’t care if it is the end for him, he needs more power to defeat Pitou. He made a contract that enabled him to get more power and defeat Pitou. The price, however, was relatively high as Gon traded his life and potential for Nen away for the small moment of extreme power.

As mentioned above, Gon traded his life away for power. He did so because he was angry and devastated that Kite was dead and wanted to take revenge for him. Gon should have lost his life after that ordeal as he lost his life energy for power.

The rest of the Hunters did everything to heal Gon but nothing worked. Ultimately Killua’s sister or rather the entity inhabiting his sister, Nanika who is a being from the dark island, healed him. Gon returned to normal with the only exception that he was unable to use his Nen.

Gon was reduced to a normal human being, unable to use nen. This was not addressed by Killua or Leorio or anyone. When Gon met Ging atop the world, he learned that he did not lose his nen as nen is present in all humans, he lost his ability to control and use nen to his liking. He may be able to regain his nen but it will be difficult for him. Ging tells him that he is now a normal human being and can find out what he wants to do in life. This is how Gon lost his nen in ‘Hunter X Hunter’.
