‘This Is Us’ Cast Celebrates Sterling K. Brown’s First Oscar Nomination For ‘American Fiction’

NBC show ‘This Is Us‘ is an underrated gem that has perhaps not yet received the recognition that it deserves. Clad with several talented actors in pivotal roles, the show has a touching story arc with its characters navigating through the intricacies of all kinds of relationships within and outside their family.

Though the show ended in 2022 after garnering much attention, its characters seem to have kept their connection alive. Sterling K. Brown, who plays the character of Randall Pearson on the show, received an Oscar nomination this year for another film he did, and his ‘This Is Us‘ family is here to cheer for him.

Brown also took to social media to share the excitement through an Instagram Live session. He said that he found out about his Oscar nomination after falling asleep on his children’s floor and waking up to almost 200 text messages.

Thank you to the Academy,” Brown said during the Instagram Live on Tuesday. “As somebody who has been watching the Oscars my whole life, I’ve never been. I’ve had a few things that have been in contention or whatnot but this will be my first time actually going to the party. And It’s an honor to get the invite.”

Brown also said that he was looking for validation from his 12-year-old son Andrew after he told him to “take it down” on bragging until he’s nominated for an Oscar. By the end of the day, Brown shared the one thing his son had to say about his dad’s major milestone: “Congratulations.”

American Fiction‘, the film that got Brown nominated, is one of the most nominated films for the Oscars this year. It received a total of five nominations, including Jeffrey Wright for Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Picture. The movie revolves around the character of a frustrated novelist, who is fighting the entertainment industry’s reliance on tired and offensive Black tropes.

In the Best Supporting Actor category, Brown will be up against Mark Ruffalo for ‘Poor Things’, Robert Downey Jr. for ‘Oppenheimer’, Ryan Gosling for ‘Barbie’, and Robert De Niro for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’.

Though Brown’s Oscar nomination is a first for the actor at the Academy Awards, he has received critical acclaim for his past performances, including his role as Randall Pearson in ‘This Is Us. The 96th Academy Awards are set to air on Sunday, March 10, on ABC.
