After ‘Oppenheimer,’ IMAX Will Release ‘Barbie’ Exclusively At The Theater Chain With A Post-Credit Scene

The summer of 2023 was exciting for cinegoers. Two of the most ambitious projects were released on the same day, inducing the biggest box-office battle of the decade. Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ and Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ were released on the same day. The former is a nuclear biographical drama about the first detonation of a nuclear weapon during the Second World War. The latter is a feminist satirical comedy starring Margot Robbie.

Both ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ emerged as clear box office winners and two of the revivers of the cinema. However, Greta Gerwig’s feature won hearts and a lot of money for Warner Bros. It is the story of Barbie, who lives happily in the women-led Barbie land. However, the fantasy world turns upside down when Ken realizes that the real world is ruled by men, and he imposes a similar situation in that world. Since the film has been doing great business, IMAX has decided to have a one-week exclusive screening of a movie with a surprise.

‘Barbie’ has emerged as one of the most important films in popular culture. Greta Gerwig resurrected ‘Barbie,’ a significant historical moment that changed the doll manufacturing industry. The director infused the mistakes of the old sensibilities that made the doll the most hated figure to make people fall in love with it again. Now, Greta has more good news for the fans. Fans will be able to witness the magic of Barbie Land on the biggest screen, which is IMAX.

IMAX was the leading distributor for ‘Oppenheimer’ which was released on the same day as ‘Barbie.’ The theater chain helped the Nolan starrer achieve its vision and replicate it on celluloid. Now, it will help ‘Barbie’ to let the fans experience the wonderland on the biggest screen. Warner Bros. announced that the Margot Robbie-starrer will be released exclusively on IMAX screens across North America and a few international territories.

In a statement, Greta Gerwig revealed that there will be exclusive extra footage released in IMAX chains. She said, “We made ‘Barbie’ for the big screen, so it’s a thrill to be able to bring it to Imax, the biggest screen of all. As a special thanks to ‘Barbie’ fans, we’re excited to share a little bit more of our cast and crew’s incredible work by adding special new footage we hope audiences will enjoy.”

Jeff Goldstein, President of Domestic Distribution, and Andrew Cripps, President of International Distribution, are thrilled to add another feather to Greta’s winning streak with ‘Barbie.’ In a joint statement, they said, “If there was one thing missing in this winning ‘Barbie’ strategy, it was being able to put Greta’s singular vision on premium Imax screens over the uber-competitive summer corridor.”

The statement continued, “That ‘Barbie’ continues to draw packed audiences around the world heading into its sixth weekend in release speaks to the quality of the film and the excitement audiences have for the story. We are so pleased to give them a chance to see ‘Barbie,’ whether for the first or fifth time, in such an experiential format as Imax.”
