The awards season brings along a lot of other things than the celebration of the best talents across the globe. While the audiences eagerly await these award ceremonies, they also keep a keen eye on everything that goes on. Be it what the celebrities are wearing wear, the shade they are throwing at each other, or even the slightest change in their expressions — nothing escapes the audiences’ eagle eyes.
But this year, there’s one more thing that many, including celebrities themselves, are highly scrutinizing. As Hollywood had a star-studded night of Emmy Awards on Monday, the red carpet this year was something that shocked many. Though the event was a dazzling one, the “red” carpet was far from being red — or any other bright color for that matter. And people are not holding back the criticism.

Did Emmy Awards “Red” Carpet Fall Short Of Matching The Dazzling Stars This Year?
The 2023 Emmy Awards marked a celebration of television’s brightest stars, but the spotlight soon shifted from the dazzling outfits to the less-than-impressive venue decor. The criticism has been pouring in for the bland decor that left both attendees and those watching from afar unimpressed.
The awards ceremony was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on January 15 this year. Though it is typically called a “red” carpet, the Emmy awards organisers defied the norms this year and featured a silver carpet. It was coupled with a black backdrop known as a “step and repeat,” with the words “Fox” and “Emmys” written on it.
Though the design choice seemed off to many, the first one to speak up about it was a celebrity — Chrissy Teigen. Known for having an outspoke personality, Teigen took to Instagram to express her dissatisfaction. Though she did not attend the event, she spoke up, “begging award shows to have better looking step and repeats.” “It seems so simple, some floral and simplicity. God I pray,” Teigen continued.

“The Backdrop Was Ugly”: Many Including Attendees And Onlookers Criticized The Red Carpet Backdrop
Teigen was not the only person to think so. Her critique found resonance with others online, with several social media users on platforms like Twitter (now known as X) agreed with her. “The Emmys step and repeat looks like the construction site of a luxury building with zero amenities FOX is so deeply unserious lmfao,” a social media user wrote on X.
“The backdrop was ugly,” a longtime event photographer was quoted as saying by The Hollywood Reporter. “I understand Fox and the Emmys want their signage, but less is more on the carpet. It’s hard to make everybody happy, but elegance and not too much pattern is better,” he further said.
This isn’t the first time a carpet’s design has disappointed people. Last year’s Oscars also faced a similar reaction to the pale beige “champagne” carpet at the Dolby Theatre. Some of the ceremony’s guests of honor were also among the people who said they do not appreciate the breaking of the “red” carpet norm.
