Marilyn Monroe’s Daily Diet Was Surprisingly Wild And It Shaped Her Iconic Curves

In Short
  • Marilyn Monroe's diet was all about simple meals that helped maintain her figure.
  • She started her day with a unique breakfast.
  • Monroe allowed herself small treats like hot fudge sundaes, balancing indulgence with her routine.

In the golden age of Hollywood, Marilyn Monroe stood as the ultimate image of glamour, with her hourglass figure, blonde hair, and a smile that lit up the screen. But behind that famous image was a surprisingly simple and slightly unusual diet that she believed kept her energized and in shape.

Unlike today’s trends filled with strict diet plans and personal chefs, her routine was basic, repetitive, and heavily focused on protein.

In a candid 1952 interview with Pageant magazine, Monroe openly shared her eating habits, which seemed unusual even at that time, and caught many people off guard.

Her mornings started even before she took a shower, usually in a simple hotel room. She would heat a cup of milk on a small hot plate, crack in two eggs, mix them quickly with a fork, and drink it while getting ready. Monroe also took a multivitamin. “I’ve been told that my eating habits are absolutely bizarre, but I don’t think so,” the actress said calmly.

“I doubt if any doctor could recommend a more nourishing breakfast for a working girl in a hurry,” she added, standing by her routine as a quick way to stay energized during long days on set.

Monroe often skipped lunch or kept the meal very light, which helped her stay active and focused.

The ‘Some Like It Hot’ star’s evenings followed a similar pattern. After filming, she would stop by a nearby market and buy something like “a steak, lamb chops, or some liver.”

She cooked it herself using a small electric oven in her room. “I usually eat four or five raw carrots with my meat, and that is all,” she explained. “I must be part rabbit; I never get bored with raw carrots.

Monroe’s diet was high in protein and low in carbohydrates, similar to what athletes or fitness influencers follow today, even though she did it decades earlier. She rarely went out for dinner and instead chose to stick to her simple routine, and believed it accentuated her figure.

Still, Monroe allowed herself small treats. “It’s a good thing, I suppose, that I eat simply during the day, for in recent months I have developed the habit of stopping off at Wil Wright’s ice cream parlor for a hot fudge sundae on my way home from my evening drama classes,” she confessed. “I’m sure that I couldn’t allow myself this indulgence were it not that my normal diet is composed almost totally of protein foods.”

More than seven decades later, Monroe’s so-called “wild diet” still captures attention. It came long before today’s high-protein trends and carefully balanced diets built around meats, eggs, plant-based proteins, and other nutrient-dense foods.

In recent years, the focus has also shifted toward whole foods, gut health, and cutting back on processed sugar. At the same time, the pressure to maintain a certain image in Hollywood has often pushed actresses and models toward extreme measures. Many have openly discussed starving themselves, developing eating disorders, or relying on pills to maintain their figures.

While the body image stories are heartbreaking, Monroe’s unabashed choices showed that simple habits and consistency could shape an icon. In a time filled with celebrity meal plans, her egg milk drink and steady routine of simple meals stand out as refreshingly straightforward.
