Netflix Confirms ‘Space Force’ Starring Steve Carell Will Not Be Renewed After Two Seasons

Looks like Netflix is not having a good year for them. During the first lockdown, it amassed 16 million subscribers. But, the post-pandemic effect is surfacing as it has lost 200,000 subscribers and sacked employees. The Netflix original scripts are also being sacked along with the employees. After the cancelation of Sense8 and Luke Cage, Steve Carell starrer Space Force is also to be axed after two seasons.

The Space Force is inspired by Donald Trump’s  Space Force as a sixth military branch. The U.S Space Force was established under the Air Force. Its mission is to protect the country from any adversaries and protect the space-central systems utilized on earth. What better fodder can one ask for for a comical spin, right? The idea was conceived by Steve Carell with his The Office showrunner Daniels. For the series, Steve Carell made a television record having $1 million per episode.

However, the idea and show with its stellar cast were not accepted quite well. The show was aired on May 29th with greater expectations from the mega-blockbuster duo from The Office. When it was aired, the critics were brutal in their reviews of the show. Rolling Stone wrote, “Daniels and Carell apparently had to learn the original Michael lesson all over again, on a much bigger scale, rendering much of Space Force uncomfortable to watch at best,” referring to how The Office, too, was thrashed with its pilot season.

Netflix has certain metrics to decide whether a show will be renewed for a new season. It must garner viewership in the initial 28 days of its release and must recover the production cost. It did not yield and failed to meet the metrics though Netflix invested heavily due to the Carell-Daniels partnership. During the second season, the production and filming base was shifted from Los Angeles to Vancouver to cut costs. Another showrunner was appointed. But, alas! Neither the reviews nor viewership improved. So, Netflix decided to halt the show and close the curtains for post-season two.
