On Friday’s edition of The Tonight Show, Shawn Mendes did double duty for Jimmy Fallon. Shawn was seen rehearsing with Fallon before the performance, when he not only acted as a musical guest but also as a co-host, in exclusive photographs shared with PEOPLE. The photographs show Mendes getting ready to assist the 47-year-old comedian with the night’s opening monologue before taking a seat behind the legendary Tonight Show desk. Fallon and Mendes rehearsed at Studio 6B at 30 Rock in New York City, where they participated in a “Thank You Notes” segment and a game, ahead of their interview with Take Me Out star Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
Shawn Mendes Also Practises “When You’re Gone” Before The Show!
Shawn and Jimmy Fallon teased the co-hosting role earlier on Friday on their own Instagram accounts. In which they attempted to replicate each other word for word in a preview of the program. Mendes also took the stage to rehearse “When You’re Gone”. This is his newest track, which he played to finish out the event after talking about his Wonder global tour.
Later that night, Mendes made his hosting debut, with Fallon initially introducing him with sleeves. This is because one has never seen him with sleeves before! Shawn was then seen joining Jimmy Fallon in some monologue jokes. The duo seems to be joking about everything from how many alarm clocks the average American sets to a British soccer player who missed a game after getting a cotton swab trapped in his ear.
Mendes Is Hosting The Tonight Show For The First Time!
Shawn is co-hosting the show for the first time. But then he has already featured as a musical guest eight times before this Friday’s edition. Jimmy called the crooner “family” on The Tonight Show after telling him the number. Mendes joins a long list of celebrities who have previously shared co-hosting responsibilities with Fallon. The list includes the likes of Cardi B and Dave Grohl. Mendes revealed earlier this month that his latest track was inspired by the breakup with Camila Cabello. Shortly after the single’s release on April 1, the musician said that he wrote the song a month after he and Cabello, broke up.
